There is nothing wrong with being cautious. Welling United is my home town team, and I have been supporting the club since 1982, have been all over home and away over the years. I accept that the club had reached a point where it needed fresh investment and direction. We'll see what happens over the next few months and until then I'll comment no more on the subject.
Not wanting to count the chickens before they hatch, but this does seem to be good news. Although the takeover is dependant on Bexley Council approving the development plans.
I appreciate the Mark Goldbergs significant investment into the ground redevelopment but really we should be focusing on increasing the support base and in conjunction with that making the ticket pricing more affordable and attractive to neutral and floating supporters.
What's the point in building a new ground if we struggle to fill just 10% of it based on the recent attendances.
I agree with the last paragraph of TheGhostOfJodyBrowns post. Although the club have made progress with initiatives such as kids go free, something "like" £99 season tickets would definitely help boost attendances. Even with an excellent Commercial Director like Paul White, we're still going to struggle getting commercial revenue unless the attendances go up.
On another note, the players that thought they were gauranteed a place in next season's squad have probably just had a massive kick up the backside. Some will be playing for their careers in the last two games. If they don't perform, Mark will be telling them to do one.
Interesting times ahead.
Hopefully Paul will get more in the way of a budget that will allow him to be more creative with regards to ticket initiatives. At the moment even doing something like a fiver a ticket for a game is a financial gamble. Would rather have Golberg than the shysters that are running Charlton at the moment.
I don't have any problems with Mark coming in as Manager - good luck. He's been there and done that. I don't have any issue with an attempt by him to invest, welcome news. I also don't have any issues with his vision for the ground, which is almost exactly my vision and masterplan had I won the lottery - I hope he can unpick all the niggly detail that may restrict (CIC, E+B, council, cricket, finance etc).
What makes me chuckle is that Welling will begin negotiations for a take over...with the existing club manager. Total joke. Sums soooo many things up.
My comment is far from being "damed if you do..." and I agree with Polo's point. My comment is positive, just have to question the ability for a business to negotiate in a strong position with...the team manager, where results/performance could affect things if negotiations go on - not my problem I guess, just seems weak. Good luck to Mark G if he can exploit.
Fair enough if he's Manager for two games and brings someone else in, but then what's the point - just keep frosty for the final two...or Mark X cat.
It'd be good if the club could clarify this in the coming weeks.
IMO if we launched a £99 season ticket (like Sutton or Eastleigh) next season our crowds could improve hugely,

and all those that have forked out for early bird season tickets would be well chuffed.
Indeed both of them would not be chuffed. However I imagine it wouldn't be too much of an administrative task to refund the difference. All hypothetical at present anyway.

Though we have had a very disappointing season I think this appointment is good news and can only be a positive for the club. Though this is very early days anything that has positive overtures can only be a good thing. Lets get behind the club
long distance fan here (Gourock = 30 miles west of Glasgow), only just found out tonight about the proposed takeover and it does (on the face of it) sound like good news. I'm a bit surprised as I thought the Hobbins family would take it forward forever... maybe that's the problem? Could/ should there be a place for them in the new set up? (not meaning to be controversial here!)
Provided there's decent investment, it's a welcome move. As a Morton fan, I have experience of how the "white knight" (late 90s for us) can go wrong but from what I read Mr Goldberg has the right qualifications (local bloke, experience at this level, must have contacts etc etc.....) so hoping Wings can get back to National League, where we belong, ASAP.
Interesting news about a take over. As someone who loaned the club money in it's hour of need I note that in the event of a take over the outstanding amount will be repaid unless I give consent to allow it to continue. I have heard nothing about this from the club.
Firstly Thank you to Dean & Barry for your efforts and hope you get back into football soon, Secondly welcome Mark to Welling United FC. I have said in previous posts that we needed new people to join the board and in that respect I have got what I wished for. I think we have exciting and challenging times ahead over the next few years and in Mark some one who has a clear vision at the helm now.
I was going to remain silent on this news but I cannot. This is a disastrous development for the club I've supported and loved for forty years, albeit from afar in the past few years since I moved out of London.
I lived in Bromley when Mr Goldberg twice had grandiose plans for huge developments which came to nothing. Firstly it was a multiplex at Bromley South which the council's planning committee rejected because they were not convinced he had the funds he said were available. Then he had plans to turn Holwood House in Keston into a leisure and golf destination. Again those plans came to nothing and he made a lot of rich and powerful enemies there. Then he took Crystal Palace to the verge of extinction. When he took over as Bromley FC manager, I remember it was on the strict condition that he had no input or involvement in the club's financial affairs. All of this is in the public domain. Does this sound like a man we want investing in Welling United FC? It could be argued all these events were some time ago but a leopard doesn't change his spots. I guarantee that the development plans will come to nothing and if Mr Goldberg is allowed anywhere near the club's finances, it won't exist in a few years time. I would advise anyone with money invested in the club to get it back quickly.
The "it was a long time ago" excuse doesn't wash anyway, as that's only due to him being banned from being a company director for a decade post-bankruptcy. Who knows what havoc he would have caused in the meantime if not for that.

Do you really think any potential new owner is n't going to have a history and, sometimes a record of failures alongside achievements?
Yes it's a gamble but in my view it's one well worth taking.

Agree with you Andy. Life in general is about taking chances and I feel this is a chance worth taking. I was chatting to a mate yesterday who is a councillor in another London Borough. When I told him he said this could re vilalise Welling and be a good thing for Bexley Council. He felt if similar circumstances were to happen in his Borough then his Council would jump at it. I am sure if this goes through we could see Welling playing in the football league one day.
