Signs for Braintree on a free transfer according to the official website.
A real shame to lose Barney, i remember him coming in as a 17 year old at left back away at Eastleigh. An amazing performance from him led us to a 3-1 win. We bought all the players a drink in the bar after the game but couldn't get him one as he was underage!
Thank you Barney for all your efforts in a Welling shirt, you always gave 100% and i'm sure you will have a successful future in the game.

One of the very few players from last season who deserved to stay at or play above National League level. Thanks Barney for all your hard work and efforts, and all the best with your career.
Hello fellas it's barney I just want to say thank you so much for all your support over the 4 years, especially being 17 and tiny (still am tiny) but keeping faith in me! There has been some amazing moments over the years that I'll never forget! Sorry about the way the season ended last season I couldn't of gave anymore it it just wasn't to be! I hope you understand that in this situation it's difficult to turn down the higher league! Hopefully I see you all soon
A free transfer?? What was the point of a two year contract then....?!
MG has chosen to let Barney go on a free (hopefully with a large sell on) and, regrettably but understandably, Barney has chosen to go and play his football at a higher level for the manager who brought him through, and hopefully a pay rise!!
New full backs have been recruited so I think this was always on the cards.
I take it the barney williams post is a fake then based on everyone ignoring it
What are you expecting? We accept he has been a good player and put the effort in and is good enough for where he is going. If that were not the case, do you think people would be perplexed about the fee situation?

Fair play to Barney coming on here and saying thanks. You've been a great player for us who gave it their all, not forgetting winning and maintaining the right back position from Faz. The awards you've won each season says enough really.
I've got no problem with players wanting to play at a higher level but when you go for £0 then that's the reason this message thread is focusing on that and not you. You're worth 4-5 figures and that means a lot to Welling. More importantly what does it tell other clubs?
Free transfers normally occur when someone is useless, reached the end of their career or has not made the grade at the level they are at. Barney is none of these and to allow him to go on a free transfer bewilders me, there must be something in it for Welling Football Club. Mr G I am sure is to astute to let our player of the last two seasons go for nothing but, without knowing the ins and outs, it still leaves me frustrated and perplexed.
Notwithstanding the above, thank you Barney for the last 4 years, if there was anyone that did the Welling shirt proud it was you. Very sorry to see you go but fully understand your reasons for doing so.

Good luck Barney! You always gave your best for WUFC. I hope you go from strength to strength. Very sorry to see you go.
Good luck barney, only player to give 100% every week and not only that but take time to say hello and be honest about the performances, as well as show how much it hurt when things wasn't going well. Best of luck for next season.
Barney, barney Williams he'll be running down the wing for me.
From the town of Rotherhithe, he'll go down in welling history.
I must have failed to make myself clear. Mark Goldberg has always gone for a big back four. How many times have we seen that? He has already signed some big full backs therefore our player of the year for the last two seasons does not fit into the current set up. Barney would be daft to turn down a move to his mentor's club so I should imagine it was a mutually agreeable release. I would expect there to be a substantial sell on clause but that is up to the manager to negotiate.
If Mark Goldberg doesn't see Sam Corne as part of his plans, he may free him from his contract to release his wages from the budget too. It is not in our control so there is no point in any of us getting upset.
Unless a large sell-on fee formed part of the transfer agreement it does seem a very strange decision to allow Barney to go on a free. Jamie is well aware of Barney's ability and I think it's unlikely that he would have been put off by being asked for a fee of a few thousand. We will never know. Anyway good luck Barney, a real 100% player.

Braintree are like us and do not have vast sums of money to pay out on transfer fees. I am pretty sure that asking for 'a few thousand' would have put Braintree off.
Well us fans should know why he was let go on a free when he was under contract. I could not believe it when I saw the news. Barney deserves to be in the National League, superb player who could easily get into the football league. I would be amazed if Sam Corne now stayed. He's probably thinking 'if Barney can get a free, so can I'. I asked Hobbins and the club Twitter feeds why there was no fee and no response. Do they not think supporters would be wondering 'what the heck is going on?'.

I think if you look above in the thread you will see why. Danson is spot on. If Barney does not fit into MG's plans then allowing him to leave means we have more in the budget for the remaining signings. Braintree are probably not in a position to pay a fee so he's been allowed to go. Personally I don't agree as I think Barney is a cracking player so we will see over the coming months whether this was the correct decision.
The club's twitter account is run by volunteers so you won't get a reply from them on matters like this.

Thank you Polo. I also don't agree. He has not been player of the year for two years for no reason but it is the new manager's decision so I don't see what Barry or the club's Twitter feed can add.
I bumped into him at Lingfield today. Said he didn't want to leave but MG prefers big defenders and he couldn't turn down the chance of playing at that level. Said he'd try to get back at some point to take in a game. He clearly loved it at Welling.
MG stated his thoughts on the website. I think if you look at what people have said in the thread and reading between the lines you have all the information you need.
