Much moaning and groaning at the weekend about conceding 15 goals in the last three away games and a minus 11 goal difference over the same period (Thank God for Adam Coombes!) but the bigger picture doesn't look a great deal better...
Three away league wins....Concord which was a freak result, a last minute own goal at Wealdstone and a clear cut win against the worst team in the league at the time who couldn't buy a goal let alone a point.
Five draws - four of them against teams currently below us in the table and the other in the dizzy heights of 13th! Indeed one of those draws was scrambled against a team who have won twice at home all season and since the draw with us have lost every subsequent home game since...
All the others are defeats and lately rather comprehensive defeats. Most Welling fans would have gone to Maidenhead and to Ebbsfleet expecting very little on the current form of their teams and ours. However they are more than entitled to expect some modicum of effort at the very least. We still have two of the top ten to play away from home and, at the moment, if you are going for the league or the play offs or even if you were fighting relegation, Welling United at home would be one of the first teams you would be hoping to face.
You do well in this league by having a decent management team. You do well by having a system of play and being organised and hard to beat. You do well in this league by having characters and a good team spirit sprinkled with a few talented players. You do not do well in this league by folding at the first sign of trouble and having a team with a backbone made of jelly. And yet we hear that at least 8 or 9 of these are likely to be here next season....Jesus did indeed weep.
When the going gets tough the Welling United of 2016/2017 vintage can't get away quick enough.
Well said, so it all comes down to the next 2 home games, 6 points may see us safe, a couple of draws or zero points and survival becomes very unlikely.
we need to get everyone mobilised for Saturday, demonstrate our support for the club we've supported for years, and push the guys on to play their heart out.
Although these next two matches are massive they are not 'must win' they are 'must not lose'. Having said that Gosport have conceded 91 league goals, Truro 87, so this is not a time for negativity. Saturday is a massive game and we all need to get behind the team despite their collective underachievement this season.
