If you have a London freedom pass and are not in a rush you can take tfl rail to Shenfield and change there for Chelmsford. That way you will only need a ticket Shenfield to Chelmsford return. This also applies to anyone with a Tfl staff/nominee pass and would save you around £7. Freedom passes etc are not valid on Greater Anglia.
