I think thats 25 goals Coombes has scored for Welling in 30 odd appearances. He and Welling seem to be the perfect fit. Nas LGhoul was absolutely magnificent today especially 1st half. Please god Jebbs injury isnt too bad. Up to 2nd now. Happy bloody days!!!
Real turning point when Jebb went off and we lost our way for most of the match after that. But winning when not at your best is a sign of good things. I think LGhoul deserved motm especially after a few weeks back when he wasnt starting. Very good crowd as well that I didnt really expect.
Well done to Slough Town by the way. Bloody made a good contest of it. Bloody good bunch of fans too. Sung their hearts out till the end. The only thing I would put a negative on was their style of play. Route one or what. Their keepers kicking foot must be aching like feck and their back fours feet too. It was a hard watch at times. Overall I thought we were just better but not by much. They will be up there at the end of the season. Good luck to them. COYW!
A good result at the end of the day and another three points without being at our best. Of course tempered by the loss of Jebb and I hope that is not too serious although it looks like a bad one. His form has been excellent this season and his goals and assists (another one on Saturday) will be greatly missed if he is out for any length of time. Gutted for us but more gutted for the player himself who seemed to be really thriving this season under King.
Slough were a decent outfit although I was expecting more football from them to be honest. Playing on a 4G pitch I thought they would be more of a passing team rather than their keeper smashing it skywards at every opportunity. When Audel went down injured late in the game I would have been happy to settle for 1-1 but well done to our lads for sticking with it. Gibbons is full of running down the right and considering he hasn't played for a number of weeks he did well (as did Banya) As he won the penalty I will gloss over the fact that he should have laid on a tap in for 2-0 in the first half....Clearly we lost a bit of balance in midfield when Jebb went off - both Mandy and Ijaha are good at what they do but creativity is not their strong suit and they look more comfortable with a third central player working alongside them. Our two wide men are possibly the best in the league on their day although I do think Nassim still needs to work on his decision making at times. He must get more than a little frustrated however when he keeps getting chopped down and the referees take no action. Someone kicks the ball away two feet and its a yellow card - players foul repeatedly and get nothing...?! I still think that the wide lads are more effective in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 which we have played away from home a few times very successfully as they get more space with less defensive duties as well. It will be interesting to see which way the manager goes next weekend with Paterson and Coombes not available.
Up front the pairing of Goldberg or Coombes didn't click at all as neither is renowned for winning headers and or holding the ball up and we looked more effective with Mills up there. Coombes doesn't offer a lot around the field but he walks off with two goals and you know he is always a threat in front of goal. It remains to be seen if he stays beyond a month - I am amazed that a club, with whom we are in direct competition, loaned him to us in the first place although I am not complaining!
A huge game next week, not least from a financial perspective, but one where we are more than capable of getting a positive result. Hopefully there will be decent away support to cheer the lads on.
Hi All, my first game in nearly six years and I really enjoyed! First half we should have been 4/5 goals up so losing a poor equaliser but then going on to win the game tells me theres a good winning mentality in the squad. Look forward to taking in a lot more football this season, crowd was brilliant with the Slough fans playing their part. Hope the lad who was injured and stretcheted off is ok.
