Well I thought Welling did quite well. We restricted Charlton to not too many chances. Their first goal came from the naughty 40 being left unmarked. A trait of MGs teams. There always seems to be too much space for the oppositions wide players. The second came from a misplaced pass that was latched onto and finished well. Some good performances from our lot particularly Cook and Rooney although the later was responsible for the above mentioned misplaced pass. Hard to tell what our forward line will be like on that showing seeing that Coombes went off. Id say hes done his groin or pulled something. All in all a good effort. All I ask is for some of the grit and determination of last years team to rub off onto this lot and we will be ok... ish. COYW
I see Coombes limped off after 12 mins so I hope its nothing serious.
Also, no Archie Johnson in the squad photo I have seen on Twitter. Anyone know the reason why?
Adam Coombes went off as a precaution as he felt a tightness. Archie Johnson was unavailable today but it's nothing sinister and is expected to start at Glebe on Thursday.
I thought todays performance was encouraging, always difficult to judge a friendly I know, but they were put under pressure at times by a useful looking Wings squad. It certainly did look like 4 leagues difference
Well Ive seen worse pre-season performances against Charlton in the past. I thought the guys gave a good account of themselves. A good run out for them to get some minutes in the legs and help them gel as a team. Anthony Cook was outstanding, think hes going to be a real asset this season alongside Nathan green. Jebb came on and looked good and Rooney played some decent balls about.
Seems I was right about Coombes being injury prone. Hopefully its nothing serious. What worrys me is where our goals are going to come from. Cosgrave didnt look a threat at all when he came on and was not strong enough on the ball. Seemed unconfident. Also the defence seemed to lack pace with both Magnus and Swaine on the verge of retirement.
That being said I know its only 3 games into pre-season and you cant hold to much stock in a friendly. Lots of positives to take from the game and I think the squad definitely has potential if Coombes, jebb and Rooney can all avoid injuries. Considering there was quite a few first team Charlton players in both halfs I thought the lads stood up well against a championship side. Like someone else said we just need some of that grit and determination from last season to remain with the team.
I think that team that was fielded in the first half is pretty much our first team apart from jebb.

I would drop a striker and play Rooney in his natural position behind 1 striker, jebb and Dymond in the middle and Archie Johnson at left back.
Wasn't a bad game against obviously a professional outfit and 0-2 is no shame. I'm personally looking forward to the Dover game next week as I think it will be more of a reflection on how the team are coming together. One good thing yesterday was the crowd,I dunno what the attendance was but i would've thought over 2000 so that must have made the club a good few quid

Does anyone know of any trouble inside the ground. Apparently Welling police have put something up on Facebook
I read somewhere possibly on fb that some silly billys pulled down adverts and chucked them into the park. Welling Police have stated they have body camera footage and will share with both clubs. Understand these were supposedly Charlton youth who certainly do not represent the majority of Charltons supporters.
A good run out in the traditional curtain raiser on Saturday. It looked like it might be a long afternoon after about 25 minutes but we competed well throughout. Whilst we didn't create much going forward we limited them to very little in the second half apart from the shot that hit the underside of the bar. It is always difficult to gauge any players on the strength of the Charlton game whereas games like Bromley and Dover should provide more of an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the team going forward. Cook was our stand out player for me on Saturday and I was quite impressed by both centre halves and great to see Jebb back on the pitch again.. Not convinced at all about the full back defensively although that is based on previous games I have seen them play rather than Saturday.
A couple of early observations. I think that discipline might be an issue this season as we have a few in this squad with, shall we say, short fuses which were in evidence at the weekend. If Dymond continues to put himself about like he did on Saturday then he will have more cards than Clintons in a few weeks time...
The big conundrum for me is the formation. We know that MG is very much a 4-4-2 man but I am not sure that suits the personnel we have at the moment. I don't see Rooney and/or Jebb being as effective in a 2 man midfield and I think 4-2-3-1 might suit us better with Jebb playing off the front man. Having said that of course Coombes is not really the type to play up front on his own so there are some decisions to be made formation wise going forward for me.
