Precisely as expected. Thought the prospect of trading whilst knowingly insolvent and the legal ramifications that that brings would focus minds. I don't expect them to be the last, they are merely early adopters.
I will also be very interested if any of those 14 players can source another contract at 80% of what they were on at Dover last season. The tale Barry Hearn tells around player negotiations when ITV Digital folded springs to mind.
Parmenter said the group of players did not agree to a short-term 20% wage cut.
As you say Stafford, can they get 80% anywhere else? Probably a stupid decision by those 14 players for themselves and a tragic one for Dover Athletic.
The players apparently agreed to 20% pay reduction as long as it was deferred and they got it back when things were more stable, the club are supposed to have said no.
Dover have always paid good wages, they've had to to attract players. They've got nice scoreboards and a new stand though..
I was coming back from Preston a couple of years ago and paid for an upgrade to first class. Walked through the train and found the whole Dover squad had booked a first class carriage. Even with a group booking deal that would have cost a bomb. Around the same time I saw our squad come back from Hyde in standard. Spend sensibly and you may survive a crisis (he says hopefully)
