Although this looks good on paper Gillingham usually play all of the Kent teams and most Gills supporters would prefer to watch their club play on the coast than a day trip to Welling if they are selective about how many pre season matches they affend. We have played their first team before and they have brought less than 100 supporters.
Much larger crowds are attracted to the big London clubs, even if they are just the youth teams.

After such a long lay-off for fans and the fact that indoor gatherings might still be limited (Indian varient) this could be a good fiture. They are not Man U, but let's not be too picky, it's pre-season, that's all!
Charlton friendly is the only friendly we should be worried about. Always a good earner and apart from one year when Dowie sent kids it's always most of the first team.
They usually announce us as the curtain raiser so it's slightly concerning .
I have no interest in playing Brentford u23s Millwall u23s etc and games like that will bring in no money. That goes for playing Gillingham or any premier league teamsu23s barring Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea
Hopefully a game Vs Charlton is still on the cards as it will be a sad day if Ponces park is now their curtain raiser.
Our friendlies have gone a bit **** recently before Covid . Playing mince like Maidstone and Bromley and Millwall 23s , they are boring and don't bring in money . ,
Ha e some invention and have a tournament or invite Reading, Blackburn, Swansea etc . Please no Erith and Belvedere friendly either that would be embarrassing they are worse than a pub team.

It would appear that the Charlton Life Message board has recorded that there will be no Charlton friendly this year. Apparently Welling were approached first about hosting Charlton U23s but turned it down hence they are off to Princes Park. There is some effort to send a Charlton XI but it may not be possible for Charlton to fit it in. There is always the other side of the story but, if true, it is somewhat of a disaster for us financially and a missed opportunity to forge a helpful link with a local Club. Finally, it would appear that Erics memory will not be celebrated this year, which is sad within its self.

In three words I can sum up everything i've learnt in life; it goes on.
Whatevers happened with the Charlton game we need to rectify it. Accept what Charlton have offered and then try to re educate the new people there what this game is all about, how it's become a tradition for 35 years after we helped them and continued to allow them to play youth and 23s at short notice.
From reading twitter and their forum it seems we've said no thanks when they offered to send a young team?
I'm sure Charlton fans would support any game as they know the tradition and they know that post Covid more than ever the money is vital to us and we could be at risk of going under with no big friendly especially after the budget was reduced last pre season to generated income with no cash injection from Mark after his video statement.
Basically the 1st team are already busy and yes we turned down the opportunity to play the u23's, stupid decision and disrespectful to Charlton which could also result in cutting future games. Still time to rectify it so let's see.
