Went to the match, interesting to see the players who are pushing for a starting spot in the team, as many of the team in this match haven't yet appeared in the first team this season, so a chance to get an idea of the depth of our squad. We looked good defensively, the opposition never looked that likely to score. But our attack was less effective, probably from not having built up lots of understanding yet, as we were quite deep, so didn't always get lots of player up when we were attacking.
A player I believe will end up being a star performer is Rob Strachan, as his passing is so accurate, and he has great vision in his passing, and he played a fine game in central defence, which was interesting as I've not seen him in that position before, but a good player can play in any position. He did a great long ball out of defence into their box for the attacker to run onto. Cameron also did a classy chip over defence for our attacking player to run onto. No individual stand out performances, as the whole team played very soundly and no one performed badly. Chi was understandably getting frustrated at our players giving the ball away cheaply at times, when we were choosing the wrong option to pass to. Assistant manager Sam Cox was playing in central defence, and it will have helped his understanding of our players to so closely see them play, and he played a great game, as well as giving lots of guidance to the players. Antony played the first half, maybe he played too deeply, as I would like to see him play on the shoulder of the last defender, so if he gets the ball he can sprint past and have an unchallenged shot, but his is still learning the striker position, so improved positioning will come with time.
A crowd of 220, which is fine for a friendly, and an interesting match to see the guys aiming for a starting place, as this is a massive season with 46 games, plus cup games, so they will get their chances as the season goes on.
