That could be interesting. Will all the players who follow him around want to go there?

Theyll end up in the NLN playoffs. Lose in the Final. Realise how many players and staff they have and how much its costing them and pull the plug on his budget. Hell get the hump and fall out with the clubs hierarchy and get sacked. Rinse and repeat.

Total nonsense.  Any expenditure at a football club should come with the approval of the finance department just as in any business. Any expenditure outside of this is usually considered gross misconduct. A Football  Manger usually cant even sign a player anyway without the approval of the secretary and presumably the chairman or board of directors.

Agreed, I would be very suprised if a manager can sign players and register them without anyone at a club knowing!

King was still under contract with us after the play off defeat, ultimately Goldberg wanted to take charge again and put his own band back together (who wouldn't have been cheap) and that didn't go well!

You are right it was total nonsence. I was trying to be funny. Obviously you did not find it amusing. Thanks for the lesson in how clubs manage their finances it really will stand me in good stead if ever i become a director of a football club.

Ain't that the truth?  I never understand the hostility from a number of our fans towards King. I couldn't give a **** if he's a nice bloke or not - we all know he's got an ego the size of a house, is probably not the easiest manager for a board to work with and spends 90 minutes moaning at officials. All of that would matter if I wanted to be his mate or go to dinner with him - guess what I don't!

What I know is that in 30+ years of following the club, the football we produced the season when only professional Torquay and Woking finished above us was some of the best I've witnessed in all those years. As you say - the owner provided him with whatever budget he did and it nearly took us all the way to promotion. I remember the 5-0 hammering of Concord away that season and thinking to myself, I don't think I've ever seen us produce such attractive, attacking football

What I also know is that in the early part of this season Feeney's budget was in excess of what King had at his disposal, and can anyone of sane mind genuinely compare the long ball dross served up currently, with the exciting play from that season. The bloke also knows every player at this level rather than lazy has been signings and certainly knows how to blend them into a cohesive, attacking unit.  If losing in the play offs somehow represents a lack of success and a reason to be mocked then what does languishing in 15th mean, with one over the shoulder rather than looking up?  If King replaced Feeney tomorrow under significantly more ambitious owners now than we had then, I for one would be excited and delighted!

Anyway, back to my lunch and all the other hobbies that being a "non footballing" person brings....

I saw an interview with Steve King where he was directly questioned about the view he overspends, and he said it was not true, as he always manages within agreed budgets. So his overspending could be a myth that people believe, or be accurate. Only his previous boards could confirm the real situation about that.

I guess the rocky situation at Gloucester means Steve King may choose to leave. The Welling board will know from previous experience of him if he overspends or not, if not, he would be a great choice to come back and finish what Goldberg's ego shouldn't have been stopped, as he is not a 20% win manager, but a consistent winner. He did excellently with us, has clearly had big problems this season with injuries and finances at Gloucester, but they overcome that and are still just 2 points below a play off spot. The only real complaint I saw about him was he didnt do interviews after the team lost, but although that is poor, the positives outweigh that silly negative.

Track records are important, I saw a very self confident manager saying he had got promotion with every team he has managed. That is interesting, it means he will always get jobs, and shown he knows what is needed to succeed consistently. Other managers have poor records of consistent failure and relegation, so would find it hard to get work with such a poor track record, unless they lie to try to cover it up.

I recently came across someone saying don't appoint a person who interviews brilliantly, but first talk with people who have previously worked with them (boards of ex clubs, fans of ex clubs) for their views on the person. Welling fans are very positive about Steve King and would like him back. It is just a shame the Welling board can't see they have demonstrably made a mistake in the current role, and that it is now time to correct that mistake. We set out to be top half of the table, in sight of playoffs. We have failed in those objectives, 8 points off the top half, 15 points off a play off spot. Looking at this and last season's tables and it shows most other teams have improved more than us this season, and continue to improve, while we get worse. So following that mantra about look where we have come from, and it is clear we have underperformed.

The first time we played Dirtford at ponces Park when he was there he grabbed me on my way to the bar, he had with him all the paperwork of finances and what the budget was at welling and what each player earned etc when he was with us. Was rather amusing.
