tonight Concord lost 3-4 to Havant. So no trip to the sewage farm next season. To get into playoffs Havant will need to beat us by 7 goals and stale buns mustnt score on Saturday.
Havant need St Albans to lose and better their goal difference by 6 goals. So if Stale Buns lose by one goal then a win by five goals will see the Hawks make the play offs.
Correct. Havant go into the game against us with very faint hopes.
No visit to Sewage Farm FC also means no visit to Leigh-on-Sea and great seafood.
Some real relegation surprises, pre-season I'd never have expected Dulwich to go down, this season their manager got two relegations, Maidstone and Dulwich. Weymouth did brilliantly to stay up, only getting 1 win and 1 draw from their first 12 games, but improving under a change of manager. Cheshunt only got 2 wins from their first 12 games, and improved as the season went on, and almost saved themselves.
Our season was a crazy rollercoaster, that only makes sense when one looks at the whole picture. We started off with a golden spell of 5 wins from our first 8 games in August and September. But now, looking back in context, that included wins against Cheshunt, Hemel and Dulwich, teams that started the season off poorly, so we met them at the right time. We then fell headlong in freefall down the table October to the end of March, only winning 5 out of 27 games, as the manager stuck to unsuccessful aimless high balls forward to an isolated striker, with hardly any midfield support, so predictably hardly any one up high enough to score for us, as he was so defensive minded he forgot you need to score to win games. When we were 5 points above relegation the manager turned a blind eye to the problems, and said we were in a fantastic position, and not in crisis.
At the end of March James Dunne thankfully finally showed someone in the club recognised the mess we were in, the players suddenly began playing for each other, moving into great supporting positions everywhere around the pitch, doing everything with 20/30% more intensity, attacking as a team, pushing up in numbers at last, and in our last 8 games after his words we won 5 drew 1 lost 2. But what makes the end of season runs so impressive is they weren't easier games like the earlier golden spell, but were tough games against high placed teams that wanted to win for their play off hopes. And the football we played in those last 8 games was mostly excellent, light years away from the crap long ball we all hate, the players are now finally keeping the ball on the ground.
The decision on Warren's reappointment will be made in May, the fans have pretty much been united in wanting him to go as his crap football was unenjoyable and a waste of the players' potential. But the team have really clicked in the last month, and what was an easy choice for the board October to late March now has some solid reasons why keeping Warren may make sense! Hmm, if he's finally realised his mistakes, and has corrected them, and the last 8 games suggest finally he may well have, maybe we should give the boy another chance?!
As good as today was, and as much as Warren deserves a lot of praise after the last few weeks form, I do have some frustration that the players couldn't have replicated this performance more over the season. The cynic in me finds it strange that performances have picked up when players are playing for deals next season.
Let's see what the summer brings.

I know Wallop, it is mad isn't it, me and you of all people thinking it could be worth giving him another shot. On the negative side, his results show he is a very average manager, on average out of every 3 games one should win 1, lose1 and draw 1. And his total league results with us are Total P 56 W 18 D 16 L 22 32% wins.
But my reading of the situation is he is narrow minded and stubborn as a manager, so from October to March stuck with his unsuccessful crap football no fans or players liked, and he finally realised he was heading for the sack yet again. So as a last roll of the dice just a few points above relegation, with only 5 wins in 5 months, he did what the fans have been saying all along - keep the ball on the ground, get more players pushing up to support attacks, cut out stupid long balls that keep getting cut out by defenders, and guess what, the noisy stupid fans who know nothing about football were actually right, and results improved, just as they would have all season if the manager hadn't been narrow minded and stubborn.
The football since the Bath game was mostly really good. I know Warren bangs on about our inconsistency, and say Dover recently was crap, but Bath, Eastbourne, Ebbsfleet and Hampton were really good games, sometimes on effort, sometimes on skill, and sometimes both. When we play with 11 guys and no dumb sendings off, we are ok!
He isnt a good manager, he criticises without understanding what he is criticising, I am around 20 years older than him, as many fans are, so lots have more football experience and understand better than him why we failed this season. Often we'd make mistakes on the ball that the opposition scored from. That was because our player on the ball had no option to pass to, so got caught out on the ball. But recently against Hampton every time we had the ball we had someone we could lay it off to, had massive possession of the game, controlled most of it, so none of those silly mistakes on the ball he lacks the football knowledge to understand why they keep happening.
So almost by accident he has stumbled on the winning tactic of the team actually moving to support each other. 38 games wasted not doing that, the last 8 games successful by doing that. A disappointing season of underperformance, but with an unexpected positive promising ending. Well, now me and Wallop say keep Warren, Alan will be ensuring opinion is fair and balanced and demanding Sack Feeney!

Someone said about Warren on the club Twitter, "You won't get where you want to go with him". That really stuck in my mind, and actually made me realise everything revolves around that.
So if the club is ambitious, and wants play offs and promotion, it is hard to make a case for him, as he does not have consistent success one needs, and though he always places inconsistency on the players, it is actually him.
But if the club is complacent, happy just not to be relegated, and want a manager that leaves the owners alone and lets the owner's daughter's boyfriend play fantasy football on the side of the pitch, then Warren is perfect for them.
I think anyone who understands football will be disappointed and understand we massively underperformed this season, only rarely fulfilling our potential, which is so frustrating, as when we fulfilled it we were as good as anyone else in the league. Now the dust settles on the whole season, and one can see it more clearly, it feels as if most managers could have done at least as well as Warren with this squad, and most could have done much better.
If the owners have sense they will realise football is a business, and it is bad business having a manager who alienates fans, and creates a downward spiral of reducing match day income from low attendances, and so makes the club less money, less money for quality players, less good results, less fans watching losing poor quality football.
It is a shame Warren doesn't realise any of this and change his arrogant approach to fans, who as the season showed quickly knew more than him what needed to be done to fix things.
Our final midfield position was 10 points above relegation, 16 points below a play off spot, so looking down, not up. If it were my decision I would move Warren to a new role in the team, as he has lots of qualities, and bring in Sam as manager, with Keith Boanas as assistant, as between them they have enthusiasm, experience, modern media friendly and connection with the players that, rightly or wrongly, I have never sensed Warren has with the squad, after the ridiculous way he behaves to them with his endless criticisms of them collectively and individually.
From last season we only kept Sam Jackson, Taylor Curran, Aaron Barnes, Jamie Sendles-White and Chi, and only 2 of them have been regular for us this season, so retention wasn't that effective. The new retention list released in May will be intriguing, it is bound to be lower if he stays, I really wonder how many of us fans if hypothetically we were players, would think we would like to stay and risk another season of disappointment or underperformance with Warren, but would stay if there is a new manager, as the last 8 games in total showed we can beat anyone in the league, and play some of the best football. Fans have walked away from Warren, players most likely will too.
Just as a final note, as usual Warren's interview was full of nonsense and poor excuses, this time about needing time to move up the table, as he is all about trying to buy more time in the job. If you look at the 6 play off teams and compare this season to where they were last season, 3 have massively improved over last season, so, bar the tactics used for most of the season, there is no reason why we couldn't have done that too.
Dartford 2 4/21
Oxford 3 5/21
Worthing 4 promoted from Isthmian League
Chelmsford 5 19/21 (third from bottom)
St Albans 6 9/21
Braintree 7 17/21 (fourth from bottom)
What amazes me is how Feeney's love of supporters shines through in the increased average attendance this season, up 22% to 818. Can this be right given all the 450 attendances towards the end?

Looked at this site earlier in the season and we were the only NLS club on a plus. The figures then were over 35% thanks to the first month or so.

Look on the bright side if it is then the last train to Paddington leaves Plymouth around 11.50. However on the flip side they dont have a sleeper car attaching at Plymouth anymore.

It is the most contradictory inconsistent season I know of, very strong start, collapse, very strong finish, for every plus there is a minus. There has been too much managerial change in recent years, but sometimes change is needed. There is an unpleasant aggressive toxic side to some people working in the club, that infects behaviour in other areas, with stupid rows between some people working in the club and fans. It is such a shame, that nonsense distracts attention from when players concentrate on quick passing football, attacking and defending we are so enjoyable to watch.
Just a quick word about James Dunne, I was disappointed with his leadership earlier this season, I couldn't see why he had that role as he wasn't particularly showing leadership out there or doing a captains job of addressing problems. Then late March he clearly thought enough was enough, and decided to lead by example, driving forward to help attacks. Previously his usual place on the pitch was around the halfway line, now he was playing miles further up often on the edge of the penalty area. In the same way Manny improved the team defensively by his new holding midfield role strengthening us defensively, so James' similar linking role behind the strikers helped us in attack.
Now the season is over and attention starts shifting on to next season, we have talked about attendances. I assume the income of clubs' in our league mostly comes from ticket sales. The list of clubs arranged in total attendance order www.transfermarkt.co.uk/national-league-south/besucherzahlen/wettbewerb/NLS6/saison_id/2022/plus/1 is scary for us if our attendances keep dropping, as three of the four teams with the lowest attendances were relegated, and the other relegated team was Dulwich, who had the best attendances by miles, but evidently one of the worst teams despite their money. It clearly shows clubs need money generated by lots of fans to be competitive.
If the club doesn't realise it needs to improve communications between fans and officials, so that the club actually knows very clearly what fans want, more and more fans will be disillusioned and stop coming, and we will be trapped in that dangerous downward repeat cycle of low crowds, low revenue, cheap players, poor results.
I was really impressed with the Southampton fans meeting with their board, it would be great if Welling fans had a similar meeting with the Welling board to see what progress can be made to improve communications and help stop all these off the pitch rows that recently seem to keep kicking off at matches, and to see what lessons have been learned on what can be improved for next season, so we don't end up with low crowds and all the problems that go with that.
The AGM cup could be interesting. Southend and Yeovil are both in big financial difficulties.
Should they not survive, Torquay would get a reprieve. If only two are relegated, then two at step 2 would get a reprieve. Kettering Town and Leamington both have a better record than Dulwich which would remove the need for a club to move north, and could even mean one coming over to the south (Steve King's Gloucester City?).
Eastbourne Borough have signed Heads of Terms with an external investor for the purchase of the club and its assets. Of course they will have to pass the directors test first. Its going to be a tough league come August.

Old school rival Woking losing cheered me up! Especially as now as a Surrey Wing. They have tried everything last few years to go up and lost a good manager in Dowson to Dartford.

In the north kings lynn got pipped to promotion and as so often happens fall apart in the playoff list 4-1 at home to Kidderminster who finished 25 points behind and Chester lost to Brackley who were 15 points behind
One of the best things about Dartford losing is seeing how their manager responds to defeat, as I enjoy his tantrums, and seeing how he sees it.
He didn't let me down with his post match interview after losing the play off semi to St Albans, taking a low key, balanced view, "we conceded the worst goal in history". Ah ha ha ha!
I imagine Ebbsfleet stay up next season, but will be interested to see if either Oxford or St Albans stay up, as they are both a bit above average in our division, so either will need major rebuilding to be competitive in a higher division.
Havant have already published their retained list, so will be busy filling in the gaps in their squad, I hope our manager and consequent squad plans are released soon so we dont lose too much rebuilding time on our rivals.
It is all very sad, things are going the predictable route.
Warren will stay as he has such a close relationship with the owner, and the owner's daughter's boyfriend, who may become assistant manager. Most players will walk away as they don't want another season of those two, so we will be doing a pretty much total rebuild, so will be at a disadvantage compared to teams together for longer. Good people connected with the club, admired by the fans, will go, as these people, just like the exodus of fans, don't want to be involved in this toxic noisy nonsense.
The fans don't rate the manager, so attendances won't be great, and we will be in that dangerous recurring cycle of low attendances, low finances, can only afford poor players, poor results...
It has all the hallmarks of a car crash of a season, as by now Welling has stopped being about football based decisions, as results no longer really matter, and is just based on the overly close and unprofessional personal connection of the manager and owner.
Realistically, the only prospect for any positive change of manager would be a change of ownership, or results being so fatal that even the owner realises we have the football equivalent of the Titanic managing us. But the ownership isn't likely to change any time soon, and they'd probably keep him on even if we were relegated, as results no longer matter, as Welling is now just a toy for certain people to noisily play with, rather than a meaningful football club.
JH whilst you make some pertinent comments re Club Management any long standing Wings fan will tell you that every season in recent memory, even including the Jamie Day era a decade ago, has seen an exodus of players and large number of new players arrive.
It is a sad fact of non league football and Welling especially.

Whilst you are not wrong regarding welling at all, more and more teams in our league are beginning to keep the majority of their players for a few seasons at least. The knock on affect of that is fans/players build a good relationship and spirit together whilst each season improving the team with a couple more and pushing for playoff places.
Most of ours will leave and we're starting again, as we have done for years, hence our position in the table (among other things).
Not too many qualms about the four announced. Howard and Barnes had their moments. Can't fault azeez for a respectable goal tally but didn't look a threat for a lot of games.
Wonder if they are mutual departures or unilateral by player or club.
I hope in addition to open trials we are actively recruiting targets.
