Really enjoyable game. The difference between us and Ebbsfleet the other day is they always had millions of options to pass to when they had the ball, we had hardly any. I am a massive believer in learning from people that are better than you, copying what they do once one has worked out what it is that makes them more successful than one, and then one is as successful as them.
So tonight we did a Ebbsfleet, often had three or more options to pass to. Maybe Warren picked up on that too. From what I have been led to believe, Warren's contract, like the players, is up in May, so like the players he is also wanting to do his best to get a new contract. We all know he is very self destructive, criticising us fans and his players, instead of sensibly playing the game successful managers do, of publicly valuing the fans and players, even if privately they think exactly as Warren does about fans and players.
But the fan dislike of aimless long balls to an isolated striker has finally got through to the manager, and for self preservation he has clearly decided to give the fans what they want, so tonight we were passing accurately, really skilful, quality football.
I have always thought we are too slow as a team pushing forward when we play older players, and tonight's incredibly young and inexperienced team had so much pace. Also laying off for each other, really great team.
Winning becomes a habit, losing becomes a habit. For 6 months we had fallen into a losing habit, going through the motions. Since that James interview the team have really stepped up, added an extra 20/30% in everything, tackling, sprinting, pushing forward... so same players, just now actually going for it, instead of just going through the motions. We're inconsistent still, W3 D2 L2 since the James talk, but the players are playing for their pride now, before it was all just a pointless aimless slog for them, as we weren't going for anything, the managers aim was just just playing each game and seeing where it gets us. Whereas once we had a clear relegation problem, that everyone but the manager could see, then the players actually had a focus and goal to avoid relegation. A shame he is so unambitious he had not set a play off target, as this group of players could easily have got that.
The mark of a great match is thinking what the post match team talk the opposition manager will give. And let's be honest, say you were the opposition manager, is there a single positive you could get from the game? That shows how well we did. Well done Warren and the guys, a performance to be proud of. That is now 4 home wins in a row, which is great, as I was getting jealous of our travelling fans being the only ones to see us consistently play well.
A good player can play in any position, so great to see Amadou play in defence the other day, and Antony in defence tonight, hopefully Warren is finally getting the idea that we have an excellent squad, so use them creatively instead of always bringing short term loans, who aren't actually better than what we already have in the squad, if he is just more imaginative in trying players in different positions.
Kai has really stepped up since Myles left, bizarre (but predictable) our best creative crossers tonight Chi and Antony, played in defence. Daniel was a step ahead of everyone else in the game. Manny is such a star, one of those players so easy to overlook and take for granted, but when you watch him closely you realise how influential he is. And that versatility, central defence, fine. Holding midfielder, fine. The solidity he has brought since Warren decided to finally make a change of formation, instead of always putting out the same unsuccessful formula, and play a holding midfield, is a big part of the recent improvement.
OK, (yawn) over to bexleylion and Odin et al to give their compulsory off topic and unconstructive slagging offs about posts that exceed their attention span.
I bumped into a player coming in, who said the season had been a crazy season. Spot on, an inconsistent real rollercoaster, promotion form, relegation form, and then a better end to the season once the players decided to play to their strengths. But really good tonight, the manager and the players really faced up to their shortcomings in recent months, and fixed them tonight at least. Best wishes to all the fans here.
Not wishing to disappoint you Johnny, here I go. You really are the perfect cure for my insomnia, I should be asleep any minute now!
Well done to all involved in this remarkable finish to the season which never looked likely a month ago. Just a shame that as we start to get things right, we come to the end of the season.
July will no doubt see a completely different group who will have to learn to join up all the dots and dashes again.
It is a shame the whole match isn't available to watch again, as I'd particularly like to watch the last 10/15 minutes again, as it was one of the most dominant spells of football I have seen any team play this season, seemed like every time we pushed forward we got into their penalty area. What made it even more impressive is hardly any of the guys are regulars, so we weren't putting out a team of guys that are used to playing together, but overcame that so well.
Nice to see the club giving the fan Harry such a welcome, in the changing rooms, out on the pitch, that connection of players/ fans/ manager hasn't been in place all season, so it is good to see something positive like that last night.
It was strange and a bit sad to watch the match knowing this is the last time many of these guys would play for us as there are always lots of moves at the end of a season. But the players have got back their pride in the last month, so it is an unexpected happy ending to the season, as a few weeks ago we were 2 places and only 5 points above relegation, then the guys woke up and won 3 of our last 4 league games, and we are safe.
Warren deserves a lot of praise I think for the tactical switch moving Manny into defensive midfield. We've been a different team ever since and shows a manager that can adapt and improve his team.
