I had another look at Southampton's Meet the board meeting, where they discussed qualities needed in appointing and retaining a football manager. The fans were unhappy as results had been poor and their manager alienated fans and threw the players under a bus (sound familiar!). The board said it was important for it to not have an ego, if they make a mistake on an appointment they must be open to quickly make a change to fix the mistake. They made some great points:

1. Before appointing a manager work out what sort of problems the team have on the pitch that he can improve.
2. What is the managers process? (Not sure our last two managers had a process)
3. How good is the manager's relationship with the players?
4. How high is the quality of training?
5. Does the manager show a high quality of day to day work to improve and achieve what the club wants to achieve?
6. How clear is the manager's plan on what we need to do to win?
7. The board should change manager when the board dont believe the club can improve any more with the manager.

I would add on get the view of fans, players and colleagues from previous club it is a red flag if the feedback is negative.

Sometimes managers are damaged goods, only available because they have failed elsewhere. Oxford got promoted last season with a manager doing his first managerial job, if no available experienced managers really jump out, giving someone their first managerial role (with a very experienced assistant manager) may be the best option. But the decision is due any day now, so the wait is nearly over!

Jamie Day was an excellent manager - first role

Adie Pennock finished sixth two years running - first role.

If the right one is identified, and they have the hunger and desire, it doesn't have to be an experienced manager.

I don't just believe we need an experienced manager but management at this particular level is crucial. It's a level far above lower league football but requires many more disciplines than professional clubs including budgeting of the squad and backroom staff, scouting and training.

Danny Bloor also recognised the importance of building the crowds at Eastbourne which he achieved whilst playing entertaining, attacking football.

With Eastbourne switching to a full time model they are likely to have many players available.

Whilst Bloors knowledge may be more Sussex based that may be no bad thing with many Kent clubs like Ramsgate, Faversham and Sittingbourne now chucking money around in addition to the established clubs.

He also achieved what he did at Eastbourne with one of the lowest budgets in the league in a part time set up.

The priority for our club should not be throwing money at a team to get promotion. We should look to be competitive at this level and build up the average crowds to over 1,000, as expressed by Paul Whitehead. We can then look at improving matchday and non matchday income streams including a plastic pitch.

Another potential candidate is Daryl McMahon who won the league with E$$$fleet. But I don't consider winning the league with a huge budget to be a great achievement and he has since gone on to do an average job at Dagenham.

I'd also have been interested in Steve Mc Kimm and Kevin Watson but they have just got jobs at Cray Valley and Ashford United respectively.

 Daryll McMahon - No thanks

Kevin Watson (the other one) is available and might be worth a punt.

In any event I wouldn't be surprised if Sam Cox is appointed or an other for a first managerial appointment. What about the u23 manager. Good first year for that team. Members of his squad we saw looked tidy.

I think this is a poor example. Ross Jenkins took over in the middle of 21/22 when Oxford City were forth. So they were already a good team and after 18 months he won them the play offs.

Jamie Day inherited a team that was already decent and had won a few games under Lee Prothero.

One game (Worcester away) I believe.

There's a rumour on twitter that the new manager is Ricky Holmes a former Player/Coach at Farnborough. Based on what I can find out about him I wouldn't even give him an interview.

If this is true then the board would have somehow found a worse choice than Warren Feeney.

I'd be absolutely gutted and relegation from this division would be expected- and deserved.

Good player in the past. Think it's a really obscure and odd name to link with us hence I now won't be surprised if that's true. I would be disappointed but only based on what is available and proven

Someone who will bring a decent style of football, be competitive and ensure we can compete and progress at this level. Would also be good to see some of the academy players come through to the first team.
You will never please everyone and there will always be those for and against regardless of who comes in.

I don't know much about him but I remember not being impressed when we got Jamie Day as manager. Look how wrong I was! An unexpected appointment might not necessarily mean a bad appointment.
I would prefer someone with experience at this level or at least with the right contacts and back room staff.

I'd be surprised if it's Ricky Holmes, as i would have thought his ambition would be to coach at a higher level, but he is very well respected as a coach, and a professional nice guy. So - not like Feeney at all. A wildcard as manager, but sometimes they work. Knows welling, knows the level.

Certain people on the board will want a manager they can manipulate and also sign players for rather than be told by the manager who they want to sign.
It will be someone new/young who may bring in a couple of his own but the rest will be signed for him and then told there's your squad and probably told what they think they should be doing and who to play.

By now my views on Warren are clear, but once news of his departure was confirmed I had a final online conversation with him, which falls into the category of "you can't help people that won't help themself" as we all know the mistakes he made here with fans that made his job so draining, so it comes as no surprise that he is already making exactly the same mistakes in his new job, as he is his own worst enemy, and that he ignored my warnings about repeating that toxicity to fans in his new job, which will be proved to be right in time.

I don't follow the league he has moved to, but it is clearly a big step up for him, he mentioned to me it is a full time pro team, playing in Europe, with home attendances in the thousands. So one can understand that interview comment about this being an opportunity he couldn't refuse.

It always felt as though he felt Welling were too small time for him, and now looks as though we were a stepping stone for him to get a bigger job elsewhere. But actually that is ok, it is great for Welling to be seen as a great place to advance ones career, as that attracts talent - Dipo's success after being here has been widely recognised, I am sure Myles will go onto big things, and our role in that will be recognised, and Warren got a big job after managing here, which reflects well on us. So if someone emerging like Ricky Holmes using us as a step upwards, that is fine, better to have that upward aim than a manager on a downward spiral (Peter Taylor comes to mind!).

I think he will be a fantastic appointment. Hopefully he will stay for many years to come and we can build an identity as we have had so many mangers since Jamie Day left the first time in 2014.

It's the start of a new era and hopefully the fans of the club, the manager and the players can all pull in the same direction now.

COYW!

Very good, said go get him as soon as feeney left so couldn't be happier. He's done a very good job down Eastbourne and hopefully it continues here.

I remember reading this thread when Warren's replacement was being decided, as with my superior knowledge of NLS I didnt know who Danny Bloor was, so was struck by the support Danny had in this talk from our knowledgeable fans.

The fans got it right in this thread last time we were here, so if the fisherman's friend isnt appointed, who would be the best recommendation for the current vacancy?

The new manager has already been decided. He's been at the last 2 games and is a good friend of one of the investors allegedly.

To be honest it could be worse, he has a decent track record in this league and I feel a bit sorry for him to be honest, it's not his fault Danny has been sacked and hrs walking into a circus.
