Can the 'tickers' take penalties again?
Of course, they can. Well done boys!

If the Wings are United...

Took us a while to get going but by the end we were much the better side. I think even the most ardent Brackley fan would agree that their keeper made a least 3 saves that would have been goals. He was definitely POTM Neither keeper laid a hand on any of the penalties. Our miss was well wide they hit the post twice. Last 32 I believe. Anyone at home will be nice

So Farnborough away will move to midweek? At least Strictly Come Dancing will be finished, so Broken Wing won't miss it if we get a distant away tie.

As the A team said, and as I often think to myself after the team I follow play outstandingly, "I love it when a plan comes together".

Danny recently made the very astute point we needed more experience in the squad. Today it really felt as though our squad are very intelligent, and have quickly learned and gained experience, which is impressive as several have moved up to this league level, so are on a really steep learning curve. This is the first time I really thought we showed lots of experience out there. We quickly fell behind to a silly goal, but our new experience means we didnt get sidetracked or deflated by that, but stuck to our game plan. In the penalty shoot out we missed our first penalty, but again used our experience to come back. So in effect twice coming back from being behind is really pleasing and shows a great mentality.

The opposition were tough, and as good as any of the teams I have seen us play so far, so to progress against them was impressive. That point about the plan coming together relates in particular to the penalties, as we have progressed on penalties in our last two cup games, but the quality of the penalties is really impressive, and you can tell lots of training has been done on them.

I saw Mr King in the main stand as well, just seemed to be watching the game, not taking notes. I overheard someone ask him what he was doing and he said 'nothing, will have a break for a while' I think he had a 3 year contract with Havant, so decent payoff or still on the payroll?

That Chippenham game struck me so much because it felt like groundhog day, the same situation repeating, previously we had often played with determination, putting in a strong performance, but not getting a result, but against Chippenham we were walking around, and instead of playing to our strengths of being a young, hungry fast attacking team were attacking so slowly, often the player on the ball standing looking around looking for someone to pass to, and we only had Tristan as an attacking player. Our league form before that match was P14, W2, D5, L7, so we were losing half our games.

Since then we have fixed the problems, by changing formation, changed some players, so the Brackley game was perfect, us using our pace all over the pitch, with the right number of attacking players, and it really stands out as the memorable turning point for me, in the same way that Chippenham game was the low point. Because we had such a poor start to the season it takes a long time to make the ground up on the teams above us that started better. But since the Chippenham game, in the league we have P6 W2 D2 L2, so much harder to beat these days. Yes, we are inconsistent, but we are getting points much more regularly and being beaten much less often. The cups show an equally positive story, since the Chippenham game in cups we have P 4 W3 L1 viewing penalty shoot outs as a win, and bearing in mind the 1 cup defeat was a fringe players team so one can't read too much into that defeat. Adding league and cup since Chippenham, P10 W 5 D2 L3. So we are WINNING half our games!

So this was why I was amused to see Steve King, waving to the Welling fans as if he was the King meeting his loyal subjects, I do lots of short term contracts, so am always putting myself forward for jobs, as that is how that jobs market works. And Steve King is shrewd and knows he needs to keep a profile and build connections and network, so that is why he pops to see us, and other teams. But the reason I was amused to see him at our place is I knew that he would be barking up the wrong tree with Welling, as although our league position has been bottom four all season long bar the lift in August when we got back to back wins, so would suggest to him and outsiders who don't watch us regularly that we are struggling and the managers place may be under threat, fans of the club who've watched our games will know the real story of the season, and the changes and resulting improvements, and that results are now turning our way. I have a very good eye for managerial ability, I can spot talent and lack of talent, so for example pointed out the issues with the Havant and Dover manager, and they got sacked. I have been equally open about my doubts about the Eastbourne manager, and if we beat them convincingly it would not surprise me one little bit if Eastbourne didn't sack their manager shortly after. And it would not surprise me if Steve King has been watching lots and lots and lots of their games recently! I'd even hazard a guess the next Eastbourne manager may be called Steve!

You dont half fancy yourself.
You have predicted that the team at the bottom of the league, and the team second from bottom would lose their managers.
You are hinting that the team third from bottom may lose theirs, if the team fourth from bottom beat them heavily.
You dont need a good eye for managerial talent, simple common sense should suffice.

This isnt just a trait in the Conference South, it also happens in the big boys leagues.

You are missing the point I was making, some managers of low position teams are walking dead, with it just a matter of time until they are sacked as they have no idea how to get out of their mess. In contrast, with our manager, in that sort of league placing, we have someone who has made necessary changes that have led to improvements, so has the backing of everyone. Rather alarmingly, quite a few of our fans seem to be in love with him!

We are now one of only six National League South teams left in this competition, so a great outcome. As everyone - particularly The Poet - knows, I love wind ups, but I can't wait to see Dominic's penalty in the highlights, he was playing such mind games with that penalty he ended up catching himself out! I also love the chant of "You cheating northern bastard" directed at a Brackley player, as Brackley play in the very far north area of nearby Oxford and Luton.

One thing about Mr King that we need to remember is he also acts as an agent. I would worry if he was seen at an under 23s game incase he was trying to tap up players. Seeing him at the JHSHCDS@PVR doesnt worry me.

The draw for the fourth round of the Isuzu FA Trophy will take place on Monday.

The draw will take place live on Talksport2 from 3.15pm. Not sure if this round is regionalised.

It's not regionalised.

We could be up at Fylde or down at Whitehawk/Hythe.

Hopefully the winner of the Whitehawk/Hythe game, or Peterborough Sports at home.

As I am sure is for many others, I have lives outside of this forum and Welling fc, and for that reason, I only look here maybe twice a week at most, and generally find others comments, observations, opinions and news most informative and useful. After around 30 minutes here this evening, ok I am a slow reader, (!) I have just caught up from earlier this week.
However, reading along and glorifying in the events of yesterday, (well done team and management by the way, an enjoyable watch) suddenly, no names who, I am thrust back to Chippenham, (again) stats calculable to any level headed person but which fabricate draws as wins, hypotheticals about, (again) our managers place being under threat leading to a past managers attendance, and finally, best of all, the suggestion that, "quite a few of our fans seem to be in love with him".
I'm left thinking what a load of total bollo***, why do I read it? and can only answer with the loss of an hour in my life!
How about sticking to the current match, current situation and current developments at JHSHCDS aka PVR?

Jimmie, FYI from my supporting experience, any footballer who plays for a team anywhere north of the river Thames, is automatically, " a cheating northern ba*tard". North/South divide?

The Poet heard his name. "If the Wings are United, they will never be divided". Nice bit of poetry.

No, Johnny, you were fooled by a wind-up and you most certainly didn't 'love' it. We simply put you straight, although it took forever and a day for you to finally grasp what was being pointed out to you but, as already stated, you got there in the end. Advice to West Side Johnny - listen to the advice, early doors. Better off in The North Bank. You remember.

As for our fans being in love with our manager... it's better they love him, rather than hate him... some way to go before we hit the love for Jamie Day though (a bit before your time, me old happy hammer). Ooooh, did we love, amoureuse.

"You cheating/dirty northern b*stard" has been heard for donkey's years and, somewhat tongue in cheek, would apply to any club north of Welling (or whatever club). Equally, "you cheating/dirty southern b*stard" etc, etc, etc. You trying to tell us you've never heard that sung at The Boleyn? You loved Harry did ya? Johnny as well?

Steve King - we will reply on that thread, soon. Mainly the same view in this house.

We heard (but unverified) that tomorrow's draw is not regionalised and would therefore agree with Polo, who is a wise man.

The Poet says:

Less about Chippenham and the word 'fix ',

More about formation and statistics,

Travelling away?... don't stumble in the dark,

You'll surely find your way, straight to Princes Park!

Make sure you're there this time, Johnny.

No excuses.

Mixing two responses into one, as this addresses Nigel's point, and The Poet's, I was really grateful to Jamison here, as he told me on this site pretty soon after I joined that this fan base is tightly knit, so it wouldnt be a good idea to alienate fans I would quite likely bump into.

That was great very well intentioned advice, and I really took that on board.

So often when I post I get replies that have nothing to do with what I have said, and are just personal attacks on me. I remember Warren telling me he didnt read the forum because it was so toxic, and I remember a board member also saying that he avoided it for the same reason. So I ignore it instead of arguing back, or maybe reply by PM.

When I first started following Welling I would post here tons, but remember looking one day at the name of the last post column, and lots of it was me! So now I hardly post here, just on the latest match thread, as it is boring being attacked by people that dont even know or understand me.

And that toxicity is why lots of people dont post here. I have had some fascinating talks with our fans, who have read what I say here, but dont post in it themselves. That is a shame, as they are so knowledgeable, and despite what people think, I am here to learn, and to listen, ie at the meet the manager I was only wanting to ask about one thing (who signed our players, which in the event I didnt even need to ask as that was asked by another fan) and was happy just to listen and learn what the other fans are interested in.

I suggested to the club that they advertise the fan forum on the match programme, as I am not sure all fans know it is here. Yes, I know there is a link on the club site, but its existence isnt widely publicised, as it is not an official club item, so they dont promote it. However for someone like me, who for various reasons cant socialise with fans, this is the best alternative, and it would be nice if more fans were aware of this site.

I think the volume of posts reflects however the club is doing, if it is bad, oddly enough fans are keener to talk, while if it is going well there is almost nothing to talk about, as everything is ok! I loved that Brackley game, as despite what people think, I dont want to come and analyse our weaknesses, I just want to come and watch us play a great game of football! We did that against Yeovil. But that may have been a one off. But we did that again against Brackley, and it was a moment of "ah yes, finally things are right, I can switch off the concern and just enjoy the games, now the inaccurate shooting and lack of attacking players has been fixed." We have come a long way in a short time this season, if one looks at the line ups of our first four matches, in descending order, and then compare them to our team and formation against Brackley, (and puzzle where were the goals going to come from in those games) you will see how comparatively quickly we have acted to fix things.

Winterbottom, Lema (Odusanya 46), Green, Vaughan, Dickenson (Olomowewe 61), Burchell, Bramble, Papadopoulos, MacAllister (Tanga 23), Isiaka, Wood. Sub not used: Andrews, Kamara.

Welling United: Winterbottom, Wood (Adom 68), Papadopoulos, Vaughan, Olomowewe, Burchell, Tanga, Bramble, MacAllister (Isiaka 74), Bramble, Odusnya (Kassarate 83). Sub not used Kamara, Byrd.

Welling United: Winterbottom, Byrd, Green, Vaughan, Olomowewe, Burchell, Tanga, Bramble, Kamara (Isiaka 68), Odusanya (Kassarate 58), Wood (Adom 68).

Winterbottom, Byrd, Green, Vaughan, Olomowewe (Lema 46), Burchell, Tanga, Odusanya, Kamara (White 68), Papadopoulos, Wood (Adom 58). Sub not used: Andrews, Isiaka.

Jealousy and competitiveness is a bad thing, but bloody hell, The Poet must surely have been the first poster to use the word "surreptitiously" on this forum, and now he is going french on us with "amoureuse". I have now got a street map of Kent, so now have a map to guide me down the road that leads directly from the station to the ground, so no more excuses, I will be there! Last season we did a new year double over Tonbridge Angels, so let's hope this season we can do the double against those cheating Eastern bastards Dudford.

Oops, this has accidentally become Hartley-esque in length, the only long Jimmie post apart from the post match Chippenham one, but that is because this subject matters to me as this forum is so valuable, it is a living history of this club. I need to study at the Wallop school of conciseness, which still has my all time favourite post, as i love the conciseness, about a unnamed player going out on loan, with Wallop posting, "Good, he's crap".

Now that is actually pretty good Jimmie (see, used your proper name). You aren't really digging anybody out and The Poet would agree with a great deal of what you said but, please note, competitive always, but never jealous. One of my old mates ended up playing for Welling, but I didn't. I just watched them! We played together as youngsters... I was half decent but he was a bit better...competitive but never jealous!
Gawd blimey, anyone who uses ridiculously long words, loves Daisy & can talk like a frog is probably a bleedin' poet.

Now, before the bollocking comes for me being off topic, roll on Talk Sport 2 for tomorrow for our Round 4 opponents.

Au revoir.

Just one last thing, Jimmie. Please be reassured, there is nobody on this forum who is out to orchestrate a personal attack on you (as you mentioned in your last post). Plenty of people on here wouldn't stand for it. Sure, people may have differing opinions & it may get a bit 'lively' at times but nobody is out to maliciously attack you. However, we are talking about football so we would expect some debate at the very least!

Pretty certain others will echo the above.

I thought Welling v Brackley was a good game to watch as Welling grew into the game. Brackley were strong and physical but rather than be intimated by them we dug in and got stronger. I would have preferred to have won in normal time. Penalties aren't goof for the heart rate. It was nice to win and be in the next round.

Verdict: Exciting
