Just need a bloody win today. Heart says Yeovil performance, head says Bath will be looking to sort their form out and will be a tough day. Travelled down and looking forward to the away craic!
The stupid overspending on last season has seriously come back to bite us on the arris. We assembled a young cheap inexperienced squad. In the early part of the season the average age of the squad was 22 yrs. The older players brought in are on the market at this stage of the season for a reason. Nobody else wants them. We just cant find a way to grab games by the scruff and grind out wins. We are naive. Inexperienced. Once we go behind we lose heart. Ability wise we arent a bad team. Mentally we are as soft as you know what.

Much as it pains me, Dodgy Dart has a point! Roy Keane is one of my favourite football commentators, he gets to the heart of matters so directly. So when a player plays excellently he doesnt get overexcited, just says about that player, "it's his job to do that".
From my detached view there seems a lack of responsibility in the coaching, when things go wrong in attack or defence there is a officials head shaking shrug like, "there they go again getting it wrong" and not the determination from the coaching set up to take responsibility and fix the problems that it is their job to fix. It is the manager and coaches job to get the players to do the basics, like placing shots carefully in attack or blocking out headers in defence, and not shrug if it goes wrong, if the players can't get the messages, the manager needs to bring new ones in who can. We can't keep carrying passengers in matches who dont learn from mistakes. They have all had enough time by now.
Mark mentioned today there is not end product from Jephte, and that is spot on, and also applies to others in the team. It is good that a 4 4 2 formation was played today and some formation creativity was used, rather than sticking to a formation that has led to only 4 league wins so far. Also that the formation change was made early, as I was struck by someone saying these days football is a 15 player game. That point was one needs to make changes in matches earlier than in old days, to rotate the squad and keep it fresh and fit instead of underused or overused.
That is the first half of the season now behind us, kind of 5 points short of safety, which in view of the chaotic start to the season isnt that bad. We keep letting the same sort of goals in, as we have been unlucky with injuries to defenders. The problems are clear for everyone to see, time for some answers to these recurring problems, or the season will end and we'll be kind of 10 points short of safety. Relegation is a scary prospect, we were relegated from the National League and look nowhere close to returning to it. If we go down this season it could be the same, another totally new team needed, and a situation like this season of taking on more settled experienced teams and falling too far behind to catch up.
Danny has loyalty to players, and they have it with him, as shown at Eastbourne team stability during his time there, and some coming with him to Welling. So the players should be realising if they meet his standards they will have stability with Welling next season, and seasons after, instead of being part of the annual merrygoround of always looking out for the next club. But for him to want to keep them they have to show they are worth keeping, and are successful, so that is the target for the second half of the season, them fighting to show they have a future at this club. I would like Danny to be with us long term, but his problem is that is dependent on the players, and they are inconsistent, so let him, themselves and the fans down sometimes by not learning from mistakes and cutting them out. It actually is as straightforward as that.
The most disappointing thing today was heart and commitment totally lacking. We actually played ok in the first half up the hill. Success was quick ball out wide and then ping cross in. Unfortunately we seem to not have the aptitude to realise this was the best move despite 2-3 successes doing this bizarre !!
Taylor Curran walking straight back into this side, says it all to me.
Bloke is not up to this standard.
Whenever he received the ball in space, he either looked for Locklan, or the keeper.
We never looked like playing football out of our right hand side, and he is the reason.
There appears to be a complete lack of trust playing out of the back when he is included.
Oh, and whilst I am it, you can stick Josh Chambers with him.
The two changes from last week. Both $hit.
Too many worthless long balls played yesterday, and frankly a lack of effort.
Will certainly not waste any more money on trips out of Paddington.
We miss Burchell at CB and playing Chambers on the left of midfield didn't work at all. We never created anything up top and once again our play broke down time and time again. I think their first three goals all came when we were in their third and even when we had a corner. Not sure what the answer is as we have something in us - look at Yeovil at home, but we go missing in too many games, especially in the West Country. I feel like saying 'stop everything you know, forget all the stats, the heat maps, data, touches etc. and just do some basics!!' Maybe I'm still nostalgic after seeing Ransom, Reynolds, Clemence last week in the bar. Really felt like I'll never bother with a long away trip again after that, but I know I'll be there again. Decent turn out from the Wings fans considering the day before Christmas Eve and the expense.
From just watching games one can't know where the buck lies, are players not given the right coaching, or do they get it but ignore/ forget it? Antony Grant has given a useful post match interview on ex Twitter X very much placing responsibility on the players for not carrying out coaching teams instructions. That is helpful in making it clearer where the buck lies. That is really good captaincy, I remember James Dunne gave a similar much needed honest interview around March saying the team needed to create more chances for the strikers, and that performances hadnt been good enough for the past 15/16 games. But the problem to me was he said this too late in the season, they should have been openly addressed much earlier. So it is good Antony called out the players much earlier, at the beginning of the second half of the season, with plenty of time still to fix the problems. twitter.com/wellingunited/status/1738639083432226979
A big reason to be keen on two strikers is both understand the sort of passes strikers need, so can supply each other. I used to go to watch Charlton a lot, and saw European player of the year Allen Simonsen play for them in 1982. His thinking was a step ahead of the players, he made runs the players didnt see. Tristan is also like that at times, getting frustrated at making runs players dont see. So if he plays more regularly with players who can spot the forward pass that will help him. That pass from Antony P for the wrongly disallowed goal against Eastbourne is the sort of supply Tristan needs, as he shows when he gets chances he can score. But he's not a lone striker that can score without much support. So I hope we play 2 up front more often, as commentary suggested to me we were making more attacks in the second half when playing with 2 up front.
Dartford are only 6 points above relegation, so even more reason to hope for us to get 2 results against them!
Didn't go to the game so cannot on the performance, however, from what I've heard from those that went, we did nor perform at all. I know it is stating the obvious but unless we have an upturn soon we are heading for the drop. I 100% agree with Gary, it's time to get down to basics, for football at heart is a simple game which is overly complicated at times. We have suffered with injuries and I must say that loan signings (from someone who was lauded as having a good reputation in this area) have not always performed as you would want, however, we have proved that away from the West Country we do have something about us. The next week is critical, and if they cannot get themselves up for these games then I do think we are in big trouble. Finally, and only a personal view, I just do not know how Chambers gets in the side in front of Paps.

In three words I can sum up everything i've learnt in life; it goes on.

This is an accurate summary of yesterday. We cheered our team on and at 2-0 down their keeper made a crucial save from Abrahams. Had that have gone in for 2-1, things might have been different as we seemed to be giving it a bit of a go at the beginning of the second half (after the introduction of Tanga & Roscrow). We had Bath rattled for a couple of minutes... but that was it. That save by their keeper halted any faint idea of a comeback. We were nowhere near good enough.
We did what we could to lift the team.
Come on boys, now do your bit on Boxing Day to lift us fans.
The Bath highlights made me look at Taylor Currans interesting approach to blocking crosses. Talking of him, when we played Yeovil and won impressively I mentioned a wise fan had told me on the way out of the ground to enjoy the moment, as it doesnt often happen like this in football.
At the time I thought he meant us beating the league leaders.
But on reflection I realised he meant enjoy the rare moment of us winning with Taylor Curran in defence!
