Next season wont be a doddle. Bit of money being chucked around in the leagues below. Understand Hornchurch are looking to join Efl as are Chatham if promoted. Even lower down the pyramid Bedford have stated their intentions as well. Unfortunately money talks and I hear and read these clubs have some great backing. Not long before some more established Efl clubs end up in non league if their not careful.

Jimmies poised to book his Wembley tickets Bromley 3-1 up
Yep, see that Bromley came back from 1-0 down at half-time.
Strong second half performance to secure their place in the final against Solihull Moors. Could be a new 2 way Wembley scarf for our super statistician, J.H.
Amazing how far these clubs have progressed when we consider that it's either Bromley or Solihull Moors for League 2. Good luck to Bromley but fairly certain the pitch will have to come up if they make it (no doubt they will be planning ahead for this, if indeed the case).,
Solihull Moors beat Barnet 4-0, so after our FA Trophy loss it shows the level these teams are at.
Solihull Moors beat Barnet 4-0, so after our FA Trophy loss it shows the level these teams are at.
Barnet finished second, and didn't thrash us despite them playing a strong side. However, there is a huge jump from the National League South to the National League. I don't think that Yeovil will find it easy unless they upgrade in quite a few positions. Worthing or Braintree will be favourites to go down.
Now we're free from relegation concerns, I feel confident speaking on behalf of all Welling fans in saying we are united about concern over the low profile of Nepalese football. Me and Riverstown think of little else! The FA is quite rightly also aware of the importance of this burning issue, and announced the England C fixture, part of a visit from the Nepalese FA to help raise the profile of football to the Nepalese community in England and increase participation from the South Asian community as part of the FAs Asian Inclusion Strategy.
It is interesting to see the non league players in the 16-man England C squad for the international friendly against Nepal on Monday 6th May. The squad consists solely of players based in the south of England, though National League Play-off finalists Bromley and National League South play-off finalists Braintree Town and Worthing have not had any players called up, likely due to their respective games taking place on the same weekend. There are 3 NLS players and 3 Barnet players named. The full squad is:
The match is being played at the Recreation Ground (aka EBB Stadium) of Aldershot Town.
There is a large Nepalese presence in the Aldershot area, due to it being the historic base for the British Army, with some very good (reasonably priced) restaurants close to the centre - look for Ghurka in the titles. There is also a Buddhist Community Centre next to the ground. Admission is £10 Adults and £5 Juniors.
Peter, thanks for confirming there is some planning in the FA after all, I didn't know any of that background.
The finances for promoted teams to the National League is a recent problem, it used to be a fairly easy step up from NLS to National League, but in the last few seasons promoted teams often get relegated within a season or two of promotion, and Maidstone and Oxford recently both came down totally outclassed. The obstacles of promotion are higher costs from having to play further away, and lots of National League teams are full time, whereas promoted NLS are usually based on part time, so the costs of going full time would be an additional higher cost. I went to see two National League games at Bromley, and the tickets were £22, £5 more than us, so they generate some extra money by higher ticket prices for National League. But looking at our attendances when we were in the National League, they werent particularly higher than NLS attendances.
The League has a much more balanced structure, all Division 2 clubs get £400K from the league, so any newly promoted team suddenly has £400K to play with, whereas teams promoted to the National League have no such assistance. Newly arrived Division 2 clubs can also get grants of up to £750K for their stadiums, whereas again, promotion to National League misses out on that massive club changing sum. Though artificial pitches are banned in the league, so promoted clubs with those have to remove them, and so lose all that pitch hire revenue. We are only 5 promotions away from the Premiership, and the days of Welling 2, Arsenal 0.

Definitely agree, Two ells. We rated Scott Rendell when he was at Cambridge Utd. He was prolific at Woking years later, of course. Good to see Ben Jefford still playing at a decent enough level.

Bromley sold 7500 so far according to their X - Solihull 1000 according to Conference forum.
Sorry to quote myself. However just had a nose around X and see Bromley have sold 12000 tickets for the final. If they get through I wonder how many of these glory hunters will turn up at Hayes Lane next season?

Towards the end of last season a couple of managers mentioned Welling were on the ascendancy. They were talking about us rising up the table for that season, but actually ascendancy applies to us longer term too, as after two bottom two finishes we've had two midtable finishes, so the next progression for continued ascendency is top half finishes. We had play off form with Rod, over all 3 months of his management so far, so it looks promising.
Gosport, Chelmsford and Maidstone all lost in play off semis, Chatham lost their final, which for various reasons I wish they'd all won. I was surprised Chelmsford lost their semi against Braintree, so watched the highlights to see what went wrong for Cheltenham, and the quality of the 3 goals Braintree scored was excellent, so no disgrace Chelmsford losing that game. Bromley got promoted to the League which surprised me on the basis of the two indifferent games I saw them play last season. I read somewhere they are the 148th team to get into the league. It's taken them 150 years to get into the league, I hope it doesnt take us 150 years to do that, or we wont be around in 90 years time to see it! NLS is tough, no easy games in the above teams, but really looking forward to the new season.
It's looking promising for Torquay United as a Consortium has purchased the club, subject to creditor approval.
Neil Warnock has been involved in an advisory capacity and may well take on a role at the club, potentially the new manager.
I think that Warnock has a director of football type role. Someone else is their intended manager. Their budget is set to be huge for NLS standards. I look forward to Welling doubling them.
You would think that Mr. King would get Torquay into the play offs, at the very least, especially with a decent budget & the input of the experienced Neil Warnock. Somebody told me that Steve King is manager at recently promoted Deal Town but this is actually a different Steve King!
In any event, let's hope our away form in the 'West Country' improves this coming season. Rod Stringer is definitely the man to make that happen.
The FA have confirmed the National League System club allocations for the 2024/25 season.
Dorking Wanderers and Boreham Wood join following relegation from the National League. Chesham United, Hornchurch, Enfield Town and Salisbury come into the league after winning promotion from Step 3.
Yeovil Town and Braintree Town depart promoted to the National League and Dartford, Taunton Town, Havant & Waterlooville and Dover Athletic depart after relegation.
All allocations are subject to ratification at The National League AGM on Saturday 8 June. Torquay's sale seems to be proceeding without hitches, so that removes Dartford's last hope of staying up if this league meeting was unconvinced of Torquay's ability to fulfil their fixtures next season.
It is going to be a challenging season, as there are lots of strong teams, my world famous superior knowledge of football was fully supported by my tips for either Maidstone or Chelmsford (NOT Cheltenham - aaagh!) to win the play offs only being ever so slightly affected by both losing in the play off semis, but they will be tough next season, and Boreham Wood and Dorking were relegated, but didn't do embarressingly, so they will be tough too. Hornchurch were promoted as runaway leaders, so interesting to see what they are like next season.

There's a guy on YouTube who is a NLS researcher for Football manager, and predicts the final table. He did well last season, got the winner right, correctly predicted 4 of the top 6, but only 1 of the bottom 4. If he does one for this season I'll post a link here. It made me think how the table may look, this is my forecast, doing it showed just how competitive this league is, as there are no real clear relegation favourites, and the top teams are strong.
I fancy Dorking to win the league, but am interested in how Maidstone do, as they had a fab season last year, great lucrative cup run and play offs, but have broken up that team, so it will be interesting to see if that is successful or a mistake by their manager who is new to management. I chatted with a released player of theirs, for an insiders view of it all, so intriguing to see if it pays off for the manager or not.
Looking forward to seeing how Hornchurch do, as they were runaway winners of their league, and have signed Darren McQueen who is one of my favourite NLS players, who I wish played for us, so keen to see how the new boys do in the NLS.
I think we could be in the play off mix, but all that will be clearer once we start playing pre season friendlies. The bookies arent yet pricing up NLS, but once I get my winnings from Dorking I can buy Marc White a properly fitting pair of trousers! And now back to the joy of Sothgate's England (I wrote this to escape that!)

When I opened this thread relegation was a possibility for us, but it felt a bit gloomy to call it "relegation watch thread" so it got given this clunky title instead, which actually is better as it covers so much more. And with all the great positive changes with our new management team, it could be "play off watch" this season.
With around 5 games played it is still too early to have any definitive view on final places, but still interesting to see how different teams have started their seasons.
Up in the National League Welling Old Boys United aka Gateshead are second, promoted Yeovil are 15th with 7 points and 2 w1ns from 5 games and Braintree are 20th with 1 win and 5 points, and Ebbsfleet bottom on 1 point from their 1 draw and conceded 13 from their first 5 games, so looking in trouble already.
Our division looks wide open this season, only Hemel and Tonbridge unbeaten, unfancied teams like Slough and Hemel in play off places, well fancied Maidstone currently struggling for goals, I'd thought Dorking had kept their squad together and thought with National League experience they'd walk NLS, but actually I find they have lots of new players this season, so are not as strong as I'd anticipated, but March White's such a strong track record in NLS he knows what's needed to succeed. Not sure if Boreham Wood kept many players from last season. We've the lowest number of goals conceded in the NLS. Chelmsford, St Albans and Aveley are usually really good sides, but now unexpectedly in the bottom 5. Big teams like Dartford and Dulwich have recently been relegated, so impossible to predict yet who is in trouble, as there's still so much time to change things.
Cray Valley PM beat us in a pre-season friendly, and were so impressive, a really organised side, and they are 2nd in the Isthmian, and wouldn't surprise if they get promotion. Dartford are 3rd, so that is a good start after last season's collapse. Hastings finished 6th last season, their highest ever league finish. Danny's taken over, and they are 12th, 2 wins from 5, the same as Dulwich. Cray Wanderers are 4th from bottom, with 1 win from 5.
There's an online blog "Off The Line Blog, Showcasing the best of the EFL and Non-League" I stumbled across as they do in depth profiles of players, and last season wrote ones about Sonny Fish and Kain Adom, so read to see how the blog saw players so familiar to Welling fans. Really great analyses about playing abilities and strengths of both players.
The day before the NLS season started the blog did a NLS season preview, predicting the final table and analysing each team. His summary about us is spot on, apart from him repeating the mistake others have made that we made lots of signings from lower divisions, and if that is spot on I am sure his ones on other teams are equally shrewd. offtheline599656488.wordpress.com/2024/08/09/national-league-south-1-24-2024-25-season-preview/
It is a fantastically useful article on lots of teams I know very little about, as the guy clearly knows his NLS (and higher divisions) inside out. With lots of teams being fairly evenly matched and finishing very close together the challenge is picking who will be the top performers and the worst performers. He boldly predicts Farnborough to finish 4th (which isnt an obvious one based on previous finishes), as he liked their signings so much, and that judgment looks right so far. He is currently right about Enfield and Weymouth finishing in the bottom 4. Aveley had a very good season last year, but he so far correctly predicts this year to be much worse for them. We're only 1 place away from his prediction for us. Inevitably a few predictions are currently wide of the mark, but on the whole great judgment by him and a great overview of our league.
This whole business of many NLS teams pretty much starting from scratch each season makes consistency hard to achieve from one season to the next.
It is early days in the league, with all but 2 teams having only played 8 NLS games so far, but then again it is about 20% of the season completed.
Last season the bottom 4 teams were relegated, and the 2 lowest surviving teams 5th and 6th from bottom were Hemel and Eastbourne. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:2023%E2%80%9324_National_League_South_table This season the top 2 teams so far are... Hemel and Eastbourne. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/national-league-south/table Last season 6 teams made the play offs, of the 5 still in the NLS 4 are in this season's lower half of the table.
I don't share The Poet's confidence about Dorking, their pitch seems to create so many injuries they can't put a consistent team out. Maidstone breaking up last season's highly successful team seems to have backfired on them so far. It is such a wide open division it could well be an unexpected winner, looking at some Hemel highlights before we played them I was worried as they attacked with such confidence and speed, interesting to see if they can maintain that. We've won 10 out of a possible 21 points so far, we've had a blip with 2 poor performances from our last 3 games, but if we learn from the mistakes instead of repeating them a play off spot is possible as this is such an open division this season, though we need at least 1 striker regularly scoring.
Certain you had Dorking down as winning the league, James!
I'm saying they will make the play offs which isn't exactly a bold prediction but I will be very surprised if they don't make the top seven. Got to stand by predictions.
Equally, as much as I love an underdog, I cannot see Enfield Town escaping the bottom four.
The Poet is right, I'd Dorking as clear winners of the league, based on them only just being relegated, and retaining their squad so they would field a near National League standard team in the NLS, which would have given them a big advantage over other NLS teams. But injuries have messed them up in the NLS, their now heavily reduced squad is being stretched and overworked, which creates new injuries, so it's now hard to see them winning the NLS. It is ok to move from ones predictions if events significantly change.
Sam Cox at Oxford City is having a nightmare start to his managerial career www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/national-league-north/table bottom of the table P7 W0 D3 L4 a couple of games ago they were 2 - 0 up and let in 2 late goals, they had a 6 - 0 cup win, hopefully he can get time to turn the league form round.
I was wondering where Sonny Fish had disappeared to, a Crawley forum said he is still injured.
I saw some recent YouTube film of Kain Adom, he has really bulked up a lot and done lots of gym work, that must be a benefit of being full time. Antony Papadopoulos has gone on loan to Maidstone which may be a bit of a mixed bag for Antony, as it must have been exciting to go to Crawley and full time football, so going back to part time football with Maidstone won't help his Crawley chances, though I always thought he was probably signed by Crawley for long term potential and that they'd put him out on loan, as I wasn't sure he was quite ready to jump 3 divisions when he left us.
In the National League Ebbsfleet sacked their manager, and the new one got their first win, but they are still bottom of the table. Braintree have slipped into the relegation zone, bridging the gap between NLS part time and National League full time is a challenge that seems to get harder each season, though Yeovil are having a sound season, just a point below play offs.
Our fixtures are randomly selected, but in our first 8 games three have been against teams currently in play off spots, two others were against top half of the table teams, so actually we've had a tough set of fixtures so far. Thank goodness we have now seen the back of Boreham Wood and Hemel until we play them again, at home in January.
But let's hope October is happier for us than September was, as we have October games against 3 of the current bottom 4 teams (Weymouth, St Albans and Enfield) we've also got play off spot Weston who will be tricky, and Worthing and Dorking, who are just a bit above us in the table, so by the end of October will have had a more balanced set of fixtures.
