A respectful question and particularly aimed at fans who have been following Welling United longer than me. Who is our best ever manager?

I've been attending games since 2015 and our manager was Loui Fazakerley. We have since had Dean Frost, Mark Goldberg, Jamie Day, Jamie Coyle, Steve King, Bradley Quinton, Steve Lovell, Peter Taylor, Warren Feeney, Danny Bloor and now Rod Stringer. That's a lot in 8 and a bit years! If I were asked I would say Steve King because it was our most successful manager in my time and I enjoyed the style of football we played that season. Jimmie made the point it is easier to be successful with a big playing budget and Steve King had that, so maybe it isn't him.

I've done a little research and these are managers we had before my time supporting Welling Alex Dyer, Liam Daish, Andy Ford, Adrian Pennock, Jamie Day (1st time around), Jody Brown, Kevin Hales and Paul Parker. Forgive me if I've missed out anyone. Was it any of these? I know little about any of them except Jamie Day won the Conference title and Paul Parker was a very good footballer

Jodie Brown was the best manager. He used to look in the mirror every morning and tell himself that. He was a very educated man too.

Or Nicky Brigden,  Conference manager of the month 3 months in a row. Although he managed a team of legends who only needed "do it" or "concentrate" to deliver the goods.

Jamie Day gets the number one spot. Decent player as well.

Liam Daish took over from Paul Parker on a temporary basis but was never given the job despite being undefeated. Admittedly it was only a handful of games, but it sticks in the mind especially as Daish doesn't get mentioned a great deal.

When Gavin and myself recorded the podcast interview with him, it was mentioned a few time's of "would he ever come back". He never actually said he wouldn't but I reckon he wouldn't entertain it unless there was significant reassurances

So true about Daish, was nailed on for the job and remarkably didn't get it after a super unbeaten run.

Yep Jamie Day for me. He brought in some of the best players to play for Welling in recent times. That title winning side were lovely to watch. Liam Daish kept us up that season and most of us thought he would keep the job. For whatever reason (Probably finances) he did not get it. He went on to do a pretty good job at Gravesend & Northfleet.

I wanted Daish to be given a chance as manager but his run was only two or three games which included a scrappy win against the bottom club (Ford United?) when everyone else was beating them 5-0. However, I would have also given Lee Protheroe a chance after we won under him at Worcester City. Instead, the Hobbins' gave it to some bloke called Jamie Day and look how that turned out!!

Thanks for the replies, from them I think Jamie Day, first stint. Best manager

Graham Hobbins must have been a long time ago.

I'm guessing no one liked Jody Brown or Tony Sitford.

Never heard of Nicky Brigden I would like to know more about him. He didn't come up in my search. I'm also intrigued by Liam Daish would like to find out more about him too.

Nice to learn the history of the club not so easy to find on the internet like big professional clubs are

Suggest you have a word with Peter Mason and get a few programs from yesteryear. They can make interesting reading and you can gleam details of our past. And to top it all you can get them for about 10-20p each.

Everybody would have LOVED Jody Brown if only we'd all been a bit more educated about football ;). I still have a WIE fanzine with "he's not the messiah" haha. I know this thread was about the best, but a personal low point was watching the wings under Paul Parker, Jody Brown, Neil Smith, Goldberg and Feeney.

Lovell was an odd one in recent history at an odd covid cancelling year so I've never been able to gather my thoughts on that period. Peter Taylor was another odd period that my brain has decided to forget - both I felt came to Welling on a bit of a favour.

Would most say Quinton and Bloor were good guys in an impossible position?

Pennock was similar to Day in that Welling gave him his first chance, was really successful and therefore was lured away to bigger things (I.e. making a living rather than be a part time window cleaner as I believe he was whilst with us)!

My first Season at PVR was Nicky Brigden - a great team, but i think he got sacked for not meeting the required standards which is mad looking back and given recent history. Terry Robbins got in the dugout for a bit. Then Kevin Hales I think finally dragged us down.

Who have I missed - Rambo...

Graham Hobbins guided us from the local leagues to the conference over two spells (there was a very brief period in 80-81 season where Sitford took over but Graham quickly realised he could do a better job and took the role back). Bridgen got a promotion to the managers job when Graham became General Manager.

Some very good points, Eastbourne Wing. We were well chuffed when Paul Parker came along but it didn't turn out too well, did it? Good players don't always make good managers an' all that. Seem to recall he was part of the 'missed penalty' brigade, as well. Anyone for pizza?

Loved Ade Pennock as he did a fantastic job for Welling. He ended up at Stoke City with Tony Pulis, no less.

Thank you everyone, some good leads there to research and an excellent idea about the programmes. If I read them it will give me a flavour of how each season was progressing over the course of it. I know very little about pre 2015 except we won the conference in 2013

Regarding the programmes, I am happy to put together one programme from each of the seasons from 1986/87 to now (with the exception of the COVID season).  If I can I will select the programme for the season which has the photo of the manager on the front cover.

They will be in the shop tomorrow, and if more are needed then more packs will be ready for next Tuesday and next Saturday.

Price would be £4, but please note occasionally the programme in a particular season might have team changes.  That's just over 10p each, and of course all moneys to WUSA.

Peter could you put a pack together for me to pick up at the Barnet match?

One of the things about Welling is it is strange, there is no clear single way to get an idea about the history of the club, as there is no public archive that shows in one place all the history, it is all spread between the fans' memories, as so much isnt available on film or in writing. I read through previous years' posts on this forum to get an idea of the history, and it was fascinating to see the cycle, every season the manager sacked, speculation on who would take over, they would go, then the cycle repeating as it is so long since we had a manager here for more than a year.

I remember someone saying we have had worse managers than Warren, which struck me, as I wondered who that would be?! Hopefully one day a Worst managers thread will open, as I'd love to know who I am lucky to have missed!

Nicky Brigden would have to be up there as the best with Jamie Day.

Took over a side that had just escaped relegation in 1988.

In the first season took us to the 3rd round of the FA Cup for the first time, narrowly losing to Blackburn Rovers 1-0.

Second season we beat Gillingham 1-0 in the FA Cup 1st round replay after a goalless draw at Priestfield. In Round 2 we drew 0-0 away to Reading TWICE and 1-1 at home, before losing 2-1 at home in the 3rd replay, having led 1-0 and looking on the way to a home tie against Sunderland.

We also reached the FA Trophy quarter-finals for the first time, losing 1-0 at Macclesfield and finished sixth in the GM Vauxhall Conference (National League), our highest ever League placing.

The following two seasons we reached the FA Cup first round, losing 2-1 away to Leyton Orient after leading 1-0 with ten minutes remaining, and 5-2 at Swansea City having led twice in the first half.

A poor start to 1991-92 and an FA Cup 4th qualifying round exit at Kingstonian saw him sacked after the game.

A great manager at a great time for the club.

Great memories tannoyman but suggest Brigden left in 1992/93 to be replaced by Terry Robbins - 1991/92 was my first season at the Club and believe we finished mid table that year!

I've followed the club for 2 years, so am trying to catch up on lots that happened before my time. That is tricky when so much club history is not clearly signposted online, so is more owned by those that actually remember from attending games and knowing those involved. I see Alan is also catching up on club history, with his longer 9 years experience of following the team, shows how hard it can be to do. Great that the fans here create a living history of the club.

I'd asked on this forum what the secret of Nicky Brigden's remarkably successful team was, as he still holds the record for many of our best performances in different competitions. I had to ask as there is hardly anything about him online, and I couldn't find what happened to him after Welling. The big secret of his success seemed to be retaining players to keep a settled squad. A shame we never do that anymore, manager and squad always changing each season, whereas other successful teams keep their manager and players longer.

I can still name virtually every player from the Nickys time a small but quality squad that played for welling not themselves

Different times though no fan forum so Jimmie would have had to write his comments out lol
