Evening all, thought Id just give everyone a detailed message on what the club has to offer for the upcoming home game vs Dover on Good Friday and moving forward . Ive had a chat with the owners and they have listened to us fans considerably regarding new drinks, dart boards and the overall design of the downstairs bar. I will summarise below feel free to drop any opinions, suggestions and comments, I know for a fact any new ideas will be considered to get our supporters back drinking in the club we all love.
- Opening time vs Dover: I have been made aware the club intends to open at 12pm to maximise the time fans can spend in the bars etc. The club will be doing a happy hour in the bar 12pm - 1pm with a discount of pints (price to be confirmed). Also, keeping it with the Easter theme, we plan to give out free Easter eggs on a first come first serve basis when an adult buys a pint - again these ideas are not finalised so any opinions on how to change / make them better will be appreciate.
- Redecoration of the downstairs bar + marquee. I saw this today and was definitely taken aback. Howard has personally got people in to redecorate and it looks much much better. I do have photos, I can attach. A better colour scheme, more accessible to all and just a better feel about the place. For the end of the season, and for the Euros in the summer our bar could be a money maker, really setting us up nicely for next season financially. This will incentivise fans to use these bars properly and make the most of their time in the club. MADRI + CIDER WILL BE SERVED IN THE MARQUEE VS DOVER.
- The outside toilets on the welling side finally do not stink!!!
- New ciders + Ales. The club has been in contact with Lily Ciders, a very popular cider brand among us fans. They have been ordered in cans and bottles and will we sold from the next home game. Also, keeping businesses locally, we have been in contact with Bexley Brewers who are supplying us with local Ales and other drinks to really give our supporters a wide range of choice. I also understand that the choice of drinks on tap is under consideration to being changed, I know Coors isnt a big fan favourite so I have suggested it gets changed - looking positive for that to happen.
I also understand the TV system is being worked on, to get different TVs showing different things eg rugby, football etc. I have inquired about putting the tables back in the upstairs bar, the smaller round top tables just to put a drink on is ideal, they will be put in for next week. Also. I was a big fan of having some music played after the game. Even if its just through the TVs the bars need an atmosphere so people dont get bored!
As I said previously, feel free to leave any comments. No one will agree 100%, everyones entitled to their opinions, but we all need to prioritise moving forward for the benefit of the football club. Sustainability and consistency is crucial, and without our loyal fans we wont have a club. Any new ideas, send them my way, my twitter is @_jakewright_05 and will be in contact with the owners regularly now on to maintain the standards of the club and ensuring everything is in interest of the fans and the future of the club.
I myself have never gone along with this mini boycott of the Wings bars and have continued to use the downstairs bar before each home game. I think its about time that we all put our grievances behind us and start supporting the clubs bars again. Reading the above post it appears that the Club are listening and want to make the fans experience a more pleasant one. Getting a better selection of Ales is a very good start. Not all of us like drinking that gold fizzy stuff. I do hope to see the bars with a lot more Welling fans in them than we have seen recently. We do now have a very decent team to support so lets support the clubs finances too. I do however understand fans who cant spend time drinking after the match as most of us have had a very long week at work and need to dedicate time to our families. COYW.
Thanks Jake for the update. Appreciate the information. It is good to see the changes and I look forward to my next visit. The Lilleys ciders do sound appealing so I will have to try a few on my next visit.
Hello, I have put forward this request about having Guinness zero for Fridays game. I am going down the club tomorrow then I can see if thats a reality or not. I personally think they should just pop down to Tesco and grab a few, would still generate income in my opinion and be a reasonable price. Thank you for your reply!
For those of who have to drive to and from games, are there any zero alcohol beers? Zero Guinness would be welcomed!

No problem, lily cider is lovely, we had the mango flavour in Chippenham on Saturday and it is very nice indeed. Well worth a try!

I could not agree more. No one can force anyone to drink in the Wings bars, however, welling do have a sense of responsibility to cater for their fans and make it more convenient to drink there more than any other pub. Hopefully tomorrow I will have some more photos to share with everyone!

Cheers Jake. I'd like to try the bar given the effort put in but if there's no zero options at all, that would probably rule it out for me. Zero Guinness would be a bonus, zero lagers fine too. I can't drink coke zero all day
Just thought Id give everyone an update as I was down the club today. The marquee is very much under redevelopment, however, is work in progress. It will look clean, tidy and look like more appropriate for Welling, but not completed - when it is completed it will look classy and will be able to host many events including the Euros in the summer! Beer and cider will also be served inside the marquee, with all other drinks including these 2 to be served at the inside bars.
Also, tables upstairs and downstairs have been implemented, something very much asked for by the fans. I myself have been behind this and have been pushing it 24/7.
Along with this, I have been guaranteed that 2 dartboards with lightings will be up and running for Fridays game vs Dover.
All we need now is fans to turn up, support your local and get behind the lads. Its a real chance to send Dover down and build up momentum for the Derby on Monday.
I myself have worked quite hard to make sure the fans have been heard, and I feel there have been steps in the right direction to make this happen eg dartboards / new ciders etc.

Any idea yet what real ale will be avaiable Friday? Will there be any on cask or will it just be bottles also will it be available in marquee or bar area?
I admire your efforts Jake but... dartboards, which presumably means sharp pointed metal darts which could be used as an offensive weapon? In my eyes not to be recommended in a football stadium bar.
Also, Gary H in opening up constructive suggestions for the bar said;
"Cask ales/real ales - I know cask ales don't last long but with the right promotion I think it might have done well yesterday. If not, then Bexley bottles last ages and a few posters advertising them as some people don't know they're in the fridge."
Please no, not in the fridge, bottled 'real' ale should be served at cellar temperature, fridge temperature removes the flavours and pleasures. Fridges are for lagers and ciders.

Hi, appreciate this comment. Personally Im not knowledgable in this field but im sure the bar staff are all over the issue. Thanks for the message!

With this logic, we should stop serving pint glasses too!

One of the dartboards will be in the old snug area which is a good space and the other in left corner as you enter. Might not be practical when very busy but when the bar empties out a bit it could be useful. Agree about the real ale, maybe a fridge purely for the real ales set at the right, warmer temperature.
Anything can be and often is used as a weapon these days including many items sold in club shop. We just have to both trust people not to be stupid and for others to make sure nothing happens. With a club like ours and our support I cannot see any cause for alarm.
