Really enjoyed the Leyton Orient PSF tonight. Thankfully pretty much all of the Welling players looked very competent and competitive.
Liked the look of the white shirted 10 who played the second half. We looked organised and very fit. Good to see General Anthony Grant in a Welling shirt again. Dave Winfield looks like an absolute beast. The two centre backs in the second half looked good too Overall bloody good run out for us and Orient.

I was disappointed with the 0 - 3 score, as we had decent openings and hit the woodwork several times, it was just they got their shots better on target in this game.

Sutton were really good though, after the match I looked into their background, as I knew they are National League, but I'd not realised they were relegated from the Second Division last season, so actually knowing that now makes our performance better than it may look from the score alone, as they'll be a full time team, and have got bags of experience from playing last season in the Second Division. The speed with which they moved the ball from one end of the pitch to the other was classy, I can't recall any side last season being better than Sutton. So creating clear openings against such a team, and not conceding in the second half, is good. As we're still getting the squad fit rather than aiming for results we didnt start with a couple of probable regular starters, and if we'd played them from the start the result may have been closer.

We didnt get enough players forward for our long ball clearances to work, as they usually had 4 or 5 back defending against our 2 in attack, and little support from the midfield, but we were quite disjointed in passing, very few moves of three or more passes, but again, that reflects so well on the opposition pressing us. After all the pre-season games against higher and lower league teams it will be good when the season starts and we'll finally see what we are like against NLS teams.

Well done to Rod and the guys for an effective pre-season, P8 W4 D1 L3 F16 A 11, effective in attack and defence. 3 games were against higher league opposition, we only lost 1 of them, winning and drawing the other 2. The Ebbsfleet game was particularly impressive and promising as they played top players including Poleon, Tanga and Cundle, yet we cancelled them out.

Sat 13 Jul A Sittingbourne W 3 1
Tue 16 Jul H Leyton Orient D 1 1
Sat 20 Jul A Dover L 2 - 3
Sun 21 Jul A Erith & Belvedere W 5 - 0
Tue 23 Jul A Bishops Stortford W 3 - 1
Sat 27 Jul A Cray Valley PM L 1 - 2
Tue 29 Jul H Ebbsfleet W 1 - 0
Sat 3 Aug H Sutton L 0 - 3

We only fielded 1 trialist against Sutton, so cut out the nonsense of last season's mostly fielding trialists in our psfs. It amused and didnt surprise me to see an interview with that manager talking about his pre-season with his new club, saying he had been found fault with for fielding too many trialists in his psfs there. It just shows some people dont learn from their mistakes, interesting to see how their early league form goes. We on the other hand got the perfect balance of signed players and trialists, so start off properly prepared. Last season psfs made one wonder where our goals would come from, this season's psfs show our goals are likely from across the team, which is handy as for me at least there are still definite question marks about strikers, but the great thing about footie is the players always have the final say and can prove any doubters wrong.

We haven't posted the Sutton highlights online, at a guess maybe because we fielded triallist Jacob Mensah, and don't like to show our triallists in film. But he has now signed for us, which so is good news, as I really liked his consistency in trial games for us. Sutton have the highlights on their channel www.youtube.com/watch

The Muppets had a couple of characters Stadtler and Waldorf who would start off saying how bad something was, then gradually get more enthusiastic, then end up raving about how good it was. Our 0 - 3 result makes me feel like them, as at first it was a disappointing result on the face of it, but actually, on review, we hit the post so many times, against a team that were 2 divisions above us last season, and are 4th favourites to win the National League, so it was a better performance than the score alone suggests, as we created lots of really good chances against a really good side, and that is promising for the NLS when we play less effective teams who weren't playing in the bloody league last year!
