That was very good. Difficult to pick a MoM in my opinion.
Nice to us keeping things tight and a clean sheet.
We needed that.
The CF played at the start needs to grow a pair.
Far too lightweight and did not win enough of the balls aimed at him
They had shorter players out jumping him for headers.
The bloke who started the last quarter had far more about him.
Thought we played well, especially the second half. Our link up play and passing was more on point and it seems we're getting to know each other better. Saw it a little bit at Hemel despite the result. Thought Torquay would offer more than long ball they delivered but that's their problem. Bit stop start with the ref giving loads then none at all. Decent win.
A great day in the office! Amazing how much better we were today than against Chesham, then hardly anyone played well, today all did. Not many teams will beat Torquay this season, so this was a great performance and win. They started with 6 players as top scorer with 2 goals each, so are well balanced, and hard not to see them in a play off spot. Anointed was our top scorer on 2, and then several on 1. Gene Kennedy's goal today makes him joint top scorer, nice to see his improvement as he learns to make more of an impact.
At half time I took an anxious look at the league table, Aveley were winning, us drawing, so Aveley were 4th from bottom on 8 points, us level on points with them, so not great only level with a relegation spot. They then lost, we won, now we're mid position, 5 points above relegation, and 5 points off the play offs.
I've watched Marc White's latest interview after a defeat, blaming injuries, it's a sign of Rod's abilities that when he's problems like that Rod goes out and positively gets quality loans to fill the gaps, instead of moaning about misfortune. I loved Elliot's cross for our first goal, he links play so well. Unlike Wallop I think Anointed did a good job leading the line, tying up defenders, closing them down to pressurise them, he's raw, still got tons to learn, but we look better with him in attack than without him.
I have watched the Torquay managers post match interview and read some of their forum posts. The bleeting on about their Disallowed goal is pretty much all they can talk about. I am allowing them that goal out of charity. So we only won 2-1 and not 2-0. If they think they were hard done by they really need to have been in attendance when we played at Bath. 3 or 4 shocking decisions that day cost us.
Yesterday most the 1st half was two teams cancelling each other out (apart from their goal lol). The 2nd half they hit the post and Rhys Lovett tip one onto the bar. We improved as the half wore on. Importantly we scored 2 goals in the half Torquay didnt manage to score during this half. So Welling won 2-0 (2-1 if you support Torquay)
Bloody hard cup tie next week. We need to be properly on it. COYW.
Mark, thanks for the correction of Gene Kennedy's scoring. And The Poet, I forgive your sporting trespasses, thanks for taking a brief break from them to mock me! After we played our second game I was tempted to post a totally pointless stat here, just to wind up brother Bexleylion, as I know how much he loves stats, as after 2 games (W 1 - 0, L 0- 1) we'd a stupid stat we were the lowest scorers in the league, with the best defence. It was a stupid stat as it was based on just 2 games, plus we'd played 1 game less than all bar Worthing, so wasn't even comparing like with like. After I voiced my concerns earlier this season about the lack of goals and assists from Gene Kennedy I read he is a defensive midfielder, which if so meant my concerns about his assists and goals was a bit unreasonable, as defensive midfielders aren't aimed to provide goals and assists. But he seems to be playing a more attacking role, and it's good to see him learning how to make a difference in the final third of the pitch.
At the match I was so impressed with Elliot's work on the wing to get the cross in, but the highlights show what I missed was the build up, which was a fantastic team build up, including the striker 9 different players involved in the build up to the goal, mostly 1 or 2 touches, getting it so quickly from one end of the pitch to the other.
I've watched the highlights, their player was definitely in an offside position behind our keeper, then moved into an onside postion, then they shot and "scored". The player was offside, but not interfering with play, so I suppose play could continue. They scored when he was onside, but maybe the linesman thought he was still offside when the ball was struck? I have to agree with Torquay, a scandalous decision, but we've had so many bad ones against us it is nice to have a lucky break for once.
It's hilarious how bitter and misguided Torquay folk are about this result. Just seen Twitter film of the disallowed goal from pretty much the same angle the linesman had that gives the best view, and you can clearly see the scorer was offside, so the scandalous decision to disallow the goal turns out to be right! twitter.com/i/status/1832429329050980670
Their match review says, "A low cross came in and the Welling attacker fluffed his lines with his right foot, it hit his standing leg, wrong-footed Hamon and found its way into the net. An unfortunate way to concede an opener." totally wrong, he swung with his right foot, connected with his right foot, and it never even touched his left leg.
And final wrong bitter comment was "Gave it a hoof would be a way to describe the Welling game plan. Fair play to them because it worked, with a lot of luck on the way and in the end they managed the game out well." except we weren't relying on long balls, we were attacking from all angles, central, wide, short passing, long passing.
But the winner of this weekend's managerial quote goes to Bath's Gerry Gill, after they lost 0 - 3 to Chelmsford and he said, "We started awful, we looked really jaded, we didnt get off the bus well..." I never knew how a team get off a bus is so important. Hopefully Gerry Gill will train his players on how to improve getting off a bus well.
Some clubs just can't take losing to 'little old welling'. We played the better football, end of. Perhaps they should look at their long ball rubbish yesterday and relying on long throw ins into the box, that never worked anyway. Embarrassing from a full time big club.

Looking at the twitter film and other highlights I have to admit it looks to me like a valid goal.
> from a throw in, the "scorer" was the furthest forward. However you can't be offside from a throw in
> the "scorer" heads the ball back towards the goal
> it then hits a Welling player and rebounds to the "scorer"
> the "scorer" then plays the ball in towards the goal where one of our players helps it in.
That said, the rest of the comments by the Torquay manager reflect a poor loser. That was also one of the few decisions that went our way. We had four players given yellow cards but similar offences from Torquay players went unpunished..
Great to see our 'new' team starting to gel. Well done team and management, keep up the good work.
For me there is another reason for disallowing the Gulls'goal. Having looked at the highlights, their number 21 who took the long throw leading to the goal, had a half of his right foot over the touch line before releasing the ball - foul throw in my book?
"A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately played* the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent... If the pass, attempt to gain possession or clearance by the player in control of the ball is inaccurate or unsuccessful, this does not negate the fact that the player deliberately played the ball."
So we cleared the ball inaccurately, the offside opponent got the inaccurately cleared ball, and scored, and according to the rules it counts as valid.
One needs to watch both the Welling highlights and the Twitter to get the full picture, the problem is if one does that one realises Dave handballed it, so they should have had a penalty for that, so had two wrong decisions against them. Shame. Chatham next, looking at their recent highlights I'm not convinced by their defence, so I'll contact escapee Borstal Boy The Poet by PM to beg for some money to bet on us, to recover my losses from my Saturday bet on Weston to beat St Albans.

As already explained dear Johnny, please do not PM me (or anybody else, even in jest, unless specifically invited). You have to understand there is a certain etiquette to be observed on this forum. One forum is 'public' & the other is 'private'. Any complaint received past, present or future has to be taken at face value and dealt with accordingly, so probably best to not go down an unsolicited PM route, even in jest. Many thanks in advance for your cooperation in adhering to our code of conduct.
Also, please do your utmost to not bet on Welling as you will probably jinx us! In any event, you are relatively new to the non league game & you will generally 'do' your money, given your limited knowledge of these clubs. My hunch is that you are not a big gambler anyway but, by your own admission, more of a drinker (sound advice - don't bet when pissed!) Don't be fooled by St Alban's & Weymouth's positions for example (see yesterday).
A pitch invasion in the '70s and '80s wasn't that unusual in English football Johnny. Consequently, me & goodness knows how many others encroaching on a London pitch (on one occasion in '80/'81) is hardly 'escapee Borstal Boy' territory. Somewhat OTT but nevertheless amusing as is usually the case with (most of!) your japes.
Perhaps you are confusing two songs by a certain group with four letters and two numbers? Cue an old Welling theme tune as seen below.
Rumour has it...you had a bet on us to beat Chesham...that explains our performance. Bleedin' jinx you are!
Even though we will be favourites to beat Chatham next Saturday, they are a decent Step 3 side & it could be a difficult game for us. They narrowly missed out on promotion last season. Please do not bet on us as you will probably jinx us!
Ringer alert, are you sure you don't support D*rtford, Johnny?
Justification of the topic matter for this post:
Good spot by Bexleylion regarding yesterday's throw in. During my playing days we would usually be penalised for this & the throw in would be duly awarded to the other side.
I wasn't aware that The Poet was the arbiter on who can speak by PM. Those who PM me (I chat more by PM than I post) will value the surprise info they should have asked me first if I permitted them to PM me... but how could they PM me to ask for my permission if I hadnt given them permission to PM me?!). But that's fine, I won't bother joking with/ about The Poet any more.
The offside rule is so arbitrary, good goals often disallowed, bad goals often allowed to stand, and everyone gets angry, interesting to see the Netherlands football folk are considering scrapping offside at amateur levels due to the aggro it causes,
"The Dutch football association (KNVB) is considering doing away with the offside law in the amateur game to limit the rising number of matches halted because of aggression over disputed decisions. The KNVB said abolishing offsides at the lower levels of the game, where there are no KNVB officials and matches are flagged by club members, could lead to an end to the threats and violence in amateur football in the country. The KNVB director Jan Dirk van der Zee said it had to do something about the problem of fighting over refereeing decisions. Last season, 1,864 matches were stopped because of violent incidents, an increase of 11% compared with the previous season and up 58% over a five-year period." A shame they can't just accept decisions, even if they disagree with them.
Good to see you answered your own question, utilising the parallel system, Mr. Westside! You lives and learns, as they say.
Trust your investigation is making steady progress but please refrain, if possible, from backing us this Saturday! Maybe have a punt on D*rtford instead? Leatherhead will love you dearly (aah...memories of Leatherhead away...the man with the lovely Afghan dog).
In football, the Dutch became heavily influenced by the English many years ago but, for me, still remain some of the friendliest
(& tallest) people I know. They are incredibly passionate, just like us. Keep in touch... with the Dutch.
Those Torquay fans ain't so bad after all. We're with Riverstown on that one, call it 2-1 to us then.
There's gonna be a Borstal... oops, sorry, wrong song!
A thoroughly good all round performance on Saturday against a supposedly full time outfit. I have seen different pictures of the offside "goal" in the first half and it could have gone either way but I think the Torquay manager is using it to mask an inept performance from his side.
After two hefty defeats and conceding seven goals in the process I think Rod would have taken a point before the game but the longer the game went on the better we played. Credit to Rhys Lovett for a great save at 0-0 which was a pivotal moment. Anthony Grant was motm for me along with Gene Kennedy with a big hand in the first goal and scoring the second - I voted him as potm for August and he looks a far bmore influential figure than last season. Every player worked hard for the team and we fully deserved the victory in the end.
A big game in the cup this weekend and it's high time we had a good Cup run again
Well said Wingnut, have always enjoyed reading your accurate, to the point summaries. Until the Wings are playing in Europe, lets not worry about Jimmie's mate the KNVB director, Jan Dirk van der Zee, I am certain they will get along together just fine but the rest of us would rather leave them to the Dutch!
And credit to the visiting supporters, from what I saw at the end of the game, several were shaking Rhys Lovett's hand who was for a while the Gulls reserve keeper last season. Rhys is doing just fine for us now. Loved their hi de hi entertainment team suits too, definitely added some colour to the afternoon! Good so many did that distance.

And well said bexleylion. Wingnut is definitely a Welling stalwart and his post match analysis invariably an accurate assessment. Hope he sticks around on the forum.
