KYL U18 Welling v VCD match report

Welling United 5-0 VCD Athletic

Team : Jordan Busby (Capt), Chris Dunphy, Sam Wilson, Jack Gyamfi-Badu, Joel Thompson (Charlie Hookway 1st half), Mark Eaton, Josh Smith, Ed Willoughby, Gabriel Odunaike, James Cummings (Matt Vitty 73), Rishi Nankani,

Unused Sub: Ollie Green

Scorers: Gabriel Odunaike (45, 63), Chris Dunphy (69), Matt Vitty (75), Rishi Nankani (78)

Welling went into their first league match of the season without injured Ian Brooke and with Joel Thompson starting despite picking up an injury in the warm up.

The first half was a pretty dismal affair with VCD continually frustrating Welling’s attempts to play and with one exception having very little to offer up front as the Welling defence soaked up all that was thrown at them. Welling themselves did manage to create a few chances, none of which came to anything until Gabriel Odunaike found the net on the stroke of half time.

Either the goal or the half time talk, I’m not sure which, had an immediate impact as Welling came out for the second half in full attack mode. The midfield were more effective and the pace of Rishi Nankani and Gabriel Odunaike (urged on from the sidelines) gave VCD real problems. The goals eventually came in the middle third of the half when Welling scored 4 in a15 minute spell – job done.

It has to be said that VCD are unlikely to be one of the strongest teams in the division but the boys did what was necessary despite not playing to their full potential. There are going to be far tougher games where a first half performance like today’s will not be redeemable in the second half.

Ken's Comments:
“We Should have scored after 30 seconds but Rishi missed a one on one with the keeper putting his shot wide. Several chances fell to Gabriel from corners which were not converted. Jordan made an excellent save one on one to keep us level.

First half was poor with our midfield not competing well enough for the ball, and playing far too behind the strikers. Second half saw a much improved display from the team, and the half time talking to certainly worked!

Great pace shown by the front two, and man of the match Gabriel scored 2 and had 2 assists. A hard earned 3 points.

Well done to Matt who scored with his first touch after coming on.”
